How to formulate a film budget

Film/television budgets cannot be arbitrary decided upon. They are based on the number of filming days needed to produce the project. Nor can breaking down the script into “eights” accurately determine how many days will be required. The script must first be broken down scene by scene according to the characters, location, daypart, VFX, etc It is the only way to determine who and what needs to be wear and for how long.

No matter which script program is used, more detailed information needs to be manually entered for the reports to be generated. Unless a character has dialog the program will not recognize it as being part of the scene. Scene headings will describe the place and daypart, but neither will register as locations on the reports, yet both are vital pieces of information. Any unusual props, SFX, stunts, or any time-consuming production aspect needs to be logged so that it will be listed in the reports.

Once the script has been broken down, the information is put into a spreadsheet with the locations listed at the top. Each column will further be broken down by daypart (IE day or night). Each scene is logged in by its scene number (IE scene 1) under its in the location and in which daypart it will be filmed The characters are listed beneath the scene number. Leaving an empty column between each location makes it easy to log in the estimated shoot time of each scene and to tally the total at the bottom.

When it comes to timings, scenes are not equal. A full page of dialogue between two characters will take less time to film than one with a big fight scene that is described in three sentences or one that takes place in a vehicle on the open road. When estimating how long to schedule for each scene the producer must factor in:

Travel time between locations
Day or night scene
Setup/wrap/clean up time
The experience level of the cast and crew
Animals and children
Number of outdoor scenes
weather
Visual effects
makeup/hair effects
costume changes
stunts/fights/action scenes
moving vehicles

Once this time frame has been determined for each scene, the totals are summed up at the bottom of the column to get a ballpark figure of how long the production will need to remain at each location. Union regulations and the exhaustion of cast/crew must be factored in when determining the length of the workday. A tired team is more likely to make mistakes which wastes time and could get someone hurt. Although it is not uncommon to have long workdays, the double-time,which will need to be paid after 12 hours, makes it more expensive than just adding another day at the location Additionally, it would be wise to add 1-2 extra days to the overall schedule for illness, weather, or an unseen event. However, if the script leans heavily toward outdoor scenes or those with a great deal of action, SFX, or has a large cast, it would be wise to add 2-3 days. It's better to have budgeted for them and not need than to need the time and not have room in the budget.

The Importance of a Film Business Plan

The biggest fallacy in the film industry and in the business world as a whole is that if you write up a business plan, all you have to do is present it to investors and they will write you a check. Even if you have the greatest of all business plans in all of history, that's not going to happen. Business plans tell investors what you are going to do. The meeting and subsequent paperwork tell them how you are going to do it. The reality is that the business plan only gains the investors' interest; it is the presenter, in this case, producer, who gives them the confidence to cut checks. Whether the producers write the plan themselves or hire someone to do it, the greatest selling point is how well they know the material and how they present it.

Not for Ourselves: A Karmic Romance

What do you do when life hands you lemons. Authors make lemonade by writing the challenges into their work. Theresa Chaze is no different. Written as a way to cope with and to understand the sexual assault, Not for Ourselves tells the tale of a woman, who is attacked and tormented by men she met for the first time at a Pagan Festival. Unable to comprehend why they chose her, she performs a magical ritual that was designed to help her understand why they would want to destroy a stranger's life. All though it is fictionalized story, it reflects how the assault and the months of harassment afterward shattered her life and nearly turned Chaze into a shut-in

Before October 18, 2006, Chaze was confident gregarious woman, who faced life with moxie and courage. Her writing career had begun to take off with the launch of her novels and screenplays. She sought out adventures and blazed her own trails through life. All that ended on October 18, 2006. The person she was died that night and she became someone she didn't recognize. Before, she forgave easily. At midnight her slate was wiped clean and everyone, including herself, had a fresh start for the new day. All that changed. The fear overshadowed her life. Leaving her home sent her into panic attacks that triggered severe asthma episodes. The fear became a rage that she turned both inward and onto others. There were many times in the next two years that she had the razor blade out and the note was written. Good friends keeping careful watch over her is the only reason she didn't follow through. Instead of asking for justice, she sought vengeance on those who had harmed her. When Chaze lost her ability to function, she sought help and was diagnosed with PTSD, After years of therapy, Chaze has glued the shards of her former self together to create a life that once again based on love, light, and hope. Writing Not For Ourselves helped her complete the healing process
.
Alyssa attends a local Pagan festival to read Tarot Cards as a way of raising funds for a local animal rescue organization. When a group of drunken men invade the festival, attacking the attendee and destroying the booths, she and others stand up to them only to learn that they are off-duty deputy sheriffs. Unwilling to let their bad behavior slide, they file complaints only to learn that the leader of the pack is the Justin Nevel, the Sheriff's nephew. Although she is one of many who complain, Nevel focuses his need for revenge on Alyssa. His harassment quickly escalates. When friends and co-workers stand up for her, his intimidation spreads to them. In an attempt to understand why she was singled out, Alyssa performs a magical ritual. But instead of receiving an answer, she is taken back to a Scottish parish and the life when she was known as Shannon Marie Cullen.

The granddaughter and heir of Jacqueline Marie Katherine de Medici, Shannon Marie lived both in and out of clan tradition. However, unlike their older sisters, she and her younger sister, Rachael, were spared the limitations and intrigues of court. Raised more like sons than daughters, they were wild and free. Both saw life as a challenge to be met and conquered. Yet there was one sadness that Shannon Marie was forced to accept or so she thought. Clan tradition stood between her and Michael being together, which led to him choosing the path of the Goddess. She loved him enough to honor his decision until the obstacles between them suddenly vanished. She selfishly agrees to the marriage. Instead of joy, their union brings about betrayal, bloodshed, and murder
.
As the memories of her past life awakened, Alyssa melds with her former self. Watching the events before her death unfold, she began to understand how the manipulation of others followed them through the ages until they are forced to again meet. In the past, one man loved her, yet her selfishness betrayed his trust. One man hated her for who she was and for what he could never have. Both have again entered her life. Have they learned enough to put finally put the past to rest or will they again make the same choices that led to murder and revenge?

Not for Ourselves is available on Amazon as a Kindle and in paperback as well as a PDF on the author's website.

Chalice Island: The rebirth of the Dark Shadows Gothic Horror

Some of you know that I am a writer and producer who tried to get the DS rights so I could produce a new feature that was more in line with the series. I wasn't able to get them so I edited out the DS and created a completely new project. Chalice Island can't replace Dark Shadows,. But it will continue the tradition with the same kind of suspense, romance, and wicked cliffhangers.

I would like everyone to like and share its Facebook page so that I can prove to the investor that there is still an audience. https://www.facebook.com/ChaliceIsland/

Chalice Island Synopsis

Ignoring the tribal warning, the Cornwall and Hamilton families moved onto an uninhabited island. Their arrogance and ignorance released an ancient evil. Working together with a Shaman, they were able to again imprison it, but in doing so their families became the key to its confinement.

Decades later, before Mildred could stop him, Alberto Stanford broke the seal and swore allegiance to the evil entity. He sealed the pact with her blood. Devastated by their mother's death, Jacqueline and Jackson's grief quickly turned into a murderous rage. Alberto easily manipulated them into blaming a union soldier. Sacrificing him opened their souls to the Master's evil. Mixing their blood with his in the chalice sealed their allegiance. For nearly 150 years they traveled the world, returning each year to perform the blood ritual, which reaffirmed their loyalty. One always needed to remain on the island to maintain control over the family interests and to protect the chalice.

In 1970, it was Jacqueline's turn to stay behind. Claiming to be her daughter, she came to visit her “cousin” Alberto. After faking his death, he and Jackson left. Instead of moving into the Hamilton Manor, Jacqueline reclaimed her parents home. Although, neglected and badly in need of major repairs, she was drawn to the happy memories of her parents. Her dedication to the restoration intrigued Morgan Cornwall. At first, she sent him away. But his playful flirtation reawakened the girl she had been before finding mother's raped and murdered body. In Morgan's eyes, she found the same love she saw between her parents. Her heart began to heal. The first time she chose to stay, Jackson was curious. The second time, Jackson also remained. He needed to know why she had chosen to age normally instead of reclaiming her youth. After meeting Bailey. he understood and he too began to heal.

Suspicious, Alberto returned. In an attempt to regain control, he uses his black magic to terrorizes the island. The evidence trail led first to Jacqueline and then Jackson. Instead of countering with her black magic, Jacqueline hides chalice. She and Morgan run for their lives. Enraged, the Master gives Alberto the length of this life to retrieve the chalice and bring Jacqueline before him. If he fails, he will face the wrath for all three. Before Jackson could escape with Bailey, Alberto transformed himself into Frank and enchanted Bailey into marrying him. Vowing revenge, Jackson leaves.

Working through others, Frank finally finds Jacqueline and Morgan on a small Reservation. Over the decades, she has earned grace. As long as she refrains from using her powers, she will remain untouchable. Yet, Frank knows her true weakness. His first attempt on her children only served to make Jacqueline more obsessive and controlling over their safety. Her smothering made her son angrier and more resentful of being confined to the Reservation.

As the clock winds down, Frank sends the vampire that he created to bring her son to Chalice Island. Jacqueline and Morgan return to find the past has not been forgotten or forgiven. Frank demands that she return the chalice. If she returns it, he will release the ancient evil. If she refuses, her son will become a vampire that she will either have to kill or force him to live in eternal confinement. If she uses her power to save her son, she forfeits her grace, erasing her life with Morgan, their children, and all the good she had done.

Jackson remains the wild card. Only Bailey knows he has returned. Which side will he take or does he have an agenda all his own.

As a butterfly is Born as Caterpillar Dies

As a Butterfly is Born a Caterpillar Dies from Theresa Chaze on Vimeo.

Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.

Every soul has lessons to learn.
Every soul is both a teacher and a student.
As a Butterfly is Born a Caterpillar Dies gives courage to those, who are going through life's transitions and challenges. How we choose to react will open or close doors. But not always in the ways we expect. Even when we chose to make the changes, the excitement intertwines with apprehension as we walk through the threshold into unknown. Change is inevitable. How we chose to face determines our next step in life.

Out of the Shadows and Into the Light: A Book of Shadows for the Modern Day World

A review by CATE CAVANAGH

Out of the Shadows And Into the Light is Theresa Chaze's personal book of shadows. I have read many books of shadow over the years and find Theresa's book the most comprehensive and educational thus far. For the beginner, it is a beautiful step by step manual which not only explains the religion of Wicca in the simplest terms but also presents guidance in the making of such items as holy water. How an altar is put together along with a comprehensive yet simple explanation of the elements is beautifully rendered. For the experienced or adept it is a wonderful refresher guide to keep on hand for those times when simpler magic is desired. She also gives guidance as to when to call upon older powers and offers cautionary advice as to when not to call upon them and when to call upon them.

Although it is important to understand the proper way in which to call deities and entities into the circle equally important is how to thoroughly release them which Theresa also provides. Integral to magic is the consecration of the circle and again, Theresa provides clear and concise instruction on the effective manner in which to achieve this.

The beginner may not have knowledge of holy days and what they embody and represent. In the section on Sabbaths and holy days, each of these are simply explained so that observances can be properly held. As she does this she correlates them with how society celebrations reflect original Pagan roots.

Rarely seen in the books of shadow that I have read is a listing of the esbats or days of monthly full moons as well as a break down of how to use full moon energy successfully. She also explains how to observe the new moon in ritual and what it represents when working magic on a new moon.

Theresa makes it very clear that Wicca is against harming anyone or forcing one's will on another that is, of course with the exception of self-defense. When necessary to defend oneself, Theresa explains how to do it without invoking the Rule of Three which would bring upon the worker three times the harm placed on another. She divides self-defense into two categories. One is a response to an attack that has already begun and the secondly, preventative measures. In the one case the maldoer's energy is reflected back and in the latter cleansing shields and reinforcing one's own energy is acceptable. Included in this subject are justice rituals for situations that are overwhelming. So important is this section Theresa gives actual rituals for whatever situation you may actually encounter.

The section I particularly enjoyed was Theresa's section on Dragons and dragon magic! This is the first book of shadows I read that actually addressed this topic! Once again Theresa wonderfully explains the magic of dragons and how to work with them. She details the different types of dragons as well as making this easily read section comprehensive in scope.

The section on prosperity is rich with the philosophy of magical thinking on the topic. It clearly outlines what and how to think and also offers some prosperity rituals that can get those bills paid. As Theresa points out prosperity is a state of mind, not a fist full of dollars. And herein lies the philosophy.

Of importance is the lesson on love rituals and what and how to work them with no consequence. What is wonderful about Theresa's book of shadows is the practical and cautionary approach to magic throughout.

From understanding Wicca to doing altar work to spells that cover just about every need we might have Theresa's knowledge and sharing of this knowledge is a gift to be gratefully accepted. There is nothing that has not been covered in this gem of a book! Out of the Shadows and Into the Light is a book of shadows that outshines many of the popular ones on the market. I highly recommend it.

With the Goddess' blessing, Sarah created a sacred space near the intersection of three minor ley lines. Everyone was welcome to come for healing and comfort. She was beloved by most for her kind and generous heart. But it ended in the dark of night. Most people thought it was an accident. Many suspected it was murder, but placed the blame where it did not belong. One knew for certain that Sarah died for greed disguised as religion. The cottage closes itself off to the world, allowing only a very select few to enter but only for short periods of time. It patiently waits for its new mistress to arrive to release the truth and finally give Sarah justice.

But Kevin will not wait. The secret, which killed his father and tarnished his reputation even into death, is slowly eating him alive. His father's death was listed as a suicide. People speculated that guilt forced him to pull the trigger. But the source of the guilt was for what he failed to do rather than what he caused to happen. Sitting in the light of the full moon, Kevin must face the same decisions. Will he destroy himself by silently allowing a murderer to go unpunished? Or will he expose her no matter what it cost? Kevin prays to the Goddess. But his prayer isn't for justice; it is vengeance.

Rachael also prays to the Goddess and she is given the means to create a spiritual bookstore, which will be a gathering place for people to learn and heal, She asks the Goddess to send her to where
she would dthe most good only for the dart to land on the one place she doesn't want to go. Accepting on faith that there is a reason, she packs up her furkids and moves to Coyote Springs. She arrives only to become the newest target of religious extremists and the catalyst in exposing a murderer. As they surround her new home intent on killing the new witch and burning down the evidence of Sarah's murder, Rachael must prematurely awaken her dragon spirit. As the flames from within threaten to force her from this life, the flames from without threaten to kill her and those she loves

Cheyenne and Celeste came to Coyote Springs to use their psychic gifts to find a missing child. They find the girl and made a new friend, Jane. Tired of rootless life, Cheyenne prays for a safe, stable home. With Jane's help, she finds an abandoned farm and decides to stay. Reluctantly, Celeste also remains. The threesome creates a spiritual retreat that grows out of their shared wisdom, respect and sense of family. Cheyenne is happy for the first time since she awoke broken and bloody beneath the blinding desert sun. Celeste had saved her then, but soon after Dominic appears on their doorstep, Celeste once again turns to the dark arts. Instead of a savior, she becomes vicious enemy with knowledge of all her strengths and weaknesses. With the dragons' aid, she was barely able to ward off their initial attack. But with each dark soul Celeste and Dominic bind to them, their malevolence grows until they will not settle for less than destroying Cheyenne and all she loves. How do you protect yourself from someone knows exactly how to steal your soul?

Combining two concepts, Never Can Say Good-bye creates an innovative spin on the ghostly genre. With a tagline, “When love is forever, death is only the beginning,” it is comparable to Ghost and The Others.

Imprisoned in her family's home, the spirit of a murdered child waits for her parents to free her. But they have reincarnated as has her killer. Randi must bring them back together so that they can forgive themselves and make amends. If she succeeds, they will all heal and she will be freed to also reincarnate. If she fails, their need for revenge will damn them all.

Sometimes Shit Just Happens

Something shit happens that is totally beyond our control.   However, it is within our power to create a positive or negative situation, depending on how we react.   My kitchen faucet suddenly decided to fail. I had replaced it less than six months early.  Anyone who has changed them out knows it's not it's not complicated, but working around and under the sink is awkward.  It can be more than a little frustrating.  I buy the new one, but I can't find the right tool that would have made it a little easier.  So I make do.  After three hours of bumping elbows, scraping knuckles, and a lot of swearing,  it's installed, but the connection to the sprayer leaks.  The harder I try, the more frustrated I become.  Since it only leaks when the water is in use, I take a break. A couple of hours later, I try again.  But instead of making it better, it's worse.  But giving up is no longer an option.  I take everything apart and start over.  Instead, of attaching the sprayer I use the plug.  It would have been nice to have the sprayer, but not having it wasn't a big deal.  It was simply easier.    After a little work, the second time worked. The faucet worked!

So I am cleaning up the mess and the broom breaks. Here I'm standing in the middle of my kitchen with a broom handle in my hand and the bristle part laying on the floor.  If it had a tongue it would have been sticking out at me.  It would have been easy to have a tantrum—to rage against the unfairness.  It would have been justified after what happened to the sink.  But all I could think was—oh crap!  Deal with it at that moment would have just been pointless because it would have just added to the frustration and stress level.  I set it aside and finished cleaning up the best I could.   The next day I kept coming back to it.  The handle and bristles were perfect except for the fact that they were no longer connected.  The tape didn't work.  There are some things that even duck tape can't fix.  The second try was more successful.  I drilled three holes through the plastic casing of the bristles into the handle and used wood screws to reattach the handle. The concept worked.  The practical application had a few flaws.  The sweeping loosened the screws.   Plan C was a modification of plan B.  I drilled two more holes.  This time all the way through both. Instead of screws, I used bolts with nuts.  The combination kept the handle from moving and thus prevent it from working its way loose.  The finished product looks a little strange, but it is sturdier than before.

The moral to this adventure is how we react determines the outcome of a challenge.  At each step, I had a choice.  I could get mad and give up or I could step back and seek alternative solutions.  By refusing to give up, I proved that when we step back and keep a clear head, we can find alternative solutions that actually improve a situation.   We just have to choose to be open to not only thinking outside the box but also ripping it apart to makes something completely new.

Imprisoned in her family's home, the spirit of a murdered child waits for her parents to free her. But they have reincarnated as has her killer. Randi must bring them back together so that they can forgive themselves and make amends. If she succeeds, they will all heal and she will be freed to also reincarnate. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Originally, Horses and Heroes was to be an episode in our series about horses, Spirit of a Nation. However, when I started doing the research, I quickly learned that there were many diverse veterans' stories to be told and a greater need for them to be shared than what one episode could contain. I decided to set Spirit of the Nation aside and develop it at a later date.

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery, which kept them safe and strong. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them information as well as permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Additionally, veterans will be hired for jobs both in front of and behind the cameras. There are already many veterans in the industry. They will be given priority for the jobs. But we will also be doing the necessary training that veterans will need for new careers.

Alternative Healing for PTSD and TBI

Horses and Heroes is an unscripted television series that will focus on healing and positive forward movement. With the help of Equine Therapy and Peer Support Therapy, every season eight veterans will be brought together to share their experiences and help each other heal through their core issues. We are seeking equity investors and a cross-branding partner to produce the first season.
The series will reach out to the 22 million veterans in the United States to give them alternative healing and coping options for their physical and emotional challenges. Secondarily, the production company will be hiring veterans for both in front of and behind the cameras. There are already many veterans working in the entertainment industry. Cosmos Productions will be giving veterans the training and experience they need to start new careers.

Michigan had been known for the forests that seemed to be endless as they reached up toward heaven. They made millionaires out of paupers. By the 1950's the virgin forests had become scarce. Determined to give Sara Jane the same high standard of life, Randolph did the unthinkable and claimed the large tract of old growth forest for himself, instead of James Enraged, James made him a pariah in the community. Only Sarah Jane and her mother stood by him. James forbid the marriage. Loving each other more than they feared him they eloped. As their happiness grew, so did his hatred, which cascaded into a series of events that caused Sara Jane's death and the murder of his granddaughter, Randi. Before Randolph could exact his revenge, he too was murdered

Death freed them, but not their daughter Trapped alone in the bedroom where Sara Jane died, Randi waits for her parents to return and free her. There is one who knows and protects the house that keeps Randi safe from disappearing into the void forever. Believing his request will be refused, Shane agrees to move into the Bellows House. Amanda shocks the town by giving her blessing for the couple to move in. Michael is ecstatic. Furious, Shane tries to manipulate Michael into moving out until she realizes that fate has given her the opportunity to finish what she started.

Elizabeth reluctantly agrees to teach a writing course at a small college. Arriving in town, she instantly regrets her decision as she meets people and places that awaken memories that she doesn't understand. By the time she realizes what is happening, it is too late to run as she comes face to face with the murderer of her child and the man, who she believes betrayed her.

Michael finally finds the room and rips off the wall that had concealed it for decades. Opening the door initiates a cascade of events that sends the past and the present on an unavoidable collision course. If they can forgive the past, Randi will be saved and freed to also reincarnate. If they seek the revenge they were denied in the past, they will all be damned and Randi will be lost in the void forever.
