Horse and Heroes: why I support veterans

Horses and Heroes is a combination of documentary series that will tell veterans’ stories as they learn new coping skills for their physical and emotional challenges. Although Equine Therapy will be the stage, the focus will remain on the veterans and how their lives, as well as those of their families, were impacted by war. Additionally, we will be hiring veterans, both those already in the industry and those looking for new careers, for the jobs both in front of and behind the cameras. Each season, Horses and Heroes will be filmed at a new equine center, which has an existing veteran program. These non-profit centers offer therapy free of charge to veterans. But their funding limits the number of veterans they can help. Each season, Horses and Heroes will pay a location fee to the hosting center. In addition, they will receive a percentage of the net profits of the season they host. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Originally, Horses and Heroes was to be an episode in our series about horses, Spirit of a Nation. However, when I started doing the research, I quickly learned that there were many diverse veterans' stories to be told and a greater need for them to be shared than what one episode could contain. I decided to set Spirit of the Nation aside and develop it at a later date.

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery, which kept them safe and strong. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them information as well as permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Additionally, veterans will be hired for jobs both in front of and behind the cameras. There are already many veterans in the industry. They will be given priority for the jobs. But we will also be doing the necessary training that veterans will need for new careers.

Horses and Heroes: A Healing Documentary for Veterans

People have asked me what we need for Horses and Heroes. What they are really asking is how would helping us benefit them. The answer is very simple. We are offering excellent opportunities to embed products/services in a family friendly documentary that will appeal to a very diverse audience, especially those who are in the military and their families. The paperwork was completed to grandfather H & H into Section 181 of the Jobs Act, which gives investors a K-1 tax deduction equal to what they invest. Our connection with the cable channels make potentially very profitable.

Horses and Heroes will be formatted for cable networks, such as the Military Channel, other Discovery networks, History Channel, AMC, and A & E. We also have a foreign television distributor interested in presenting Horses and Heroes to their European networks. Our director, Larry Wilcox, has a strong connection to a distributor, who has connections with universities, colleges, and medical facilities. However, we will also be sponsoring a very limited theatrical release, which will act as fundraisers for veterans’ organizations such as Wounded Warrior Project, Military Warriors Support Foundation, Coming Home Project, and Operation Second Chance etc. Documentaries and films, which are shown in theatres and in film festivals, receive better network leasing contracts as well as greater DVD/download sales. In addition, the expenses connected to fund raising events would be considered a donation to the non-profit group and thereby they will be tax deductible.

The package would cost approximately the same as one national ad. However, we have broken the time into five segments the three 30 second bumpers and the two the 10 second billboards to make it affordable to smaller companies.
