Do Film and Television Producers Actually Work?

Many people have misconceptions about what a producer is and what they do.  Producers are jacks of all trades, masters of few. She or he needs people skills and technical knowledge, while still being willing to not only think outside the box but also rip that sucker up and reinvent it.

They are mediators and counselors of egos, who understand that sometimes you need to hold hands, while other times they need to kick butt.  Cast and crew are people with individual challenges that sometimes spill over onto the set.  Differing opinions can be resolved if the common goal remains to produce quality.   Hiring the right people means more than just focusing on experience or job skills.  It’s bringing together those who work easily and effectively together.  One bad apple will create a hostile work environment that threatens every aspect of production. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs to be besties, but respect is paramount.  Another analogy would be that of gears in a machine.  It only takes one to be out of sync to start a cascading effect that will eventually cause a loss of productivity.

Having a general, yet working knowledge, of all aspects of production, marketing, and distribution means knowing more than just the job description.  It’s being able to assist without getting in the way or becoming a liability to the task at hand.   The producer doesn’t have to be able to set the lights, but she or he must know the difference between a flood and a spot.  It’s having the humility to be willing to pull cables, help with food service, pick up trash, and load equipment.  It’s doing the job at hand without egos getting in the way.

As scrouges, they find cost-effective solutions to production challenges.  She or he needs to be inventive enough to turn to drop clothes and Christmas lights into the interior of a circus tent.  It also requires helping the team to be flexible enough to alter schedules and methods when challenges present themselves.  You can plan to the nth degree and things will still go sideways.   Freaking out or allowing others to do so only exacerbates the situation.  Running around with their hair on fire because it rained or someone came down with the flu, only creates unnecessary stress.  However, remaining calm and stepping back lowers the emotional temperature and makes finding solutions much easier.  Effective producers formulate plan b and an outline for plan c.

Having these skill sets gives the producer the ability to bring projects in on time and within budget.  It also builds teams that become working families that build the trust that is necessary to produce quality, while pushing the status quo of the industry.

Chalice Island: The Continuation of the Dark Shadows Legacy

In partnership with Kaleidoscope Film and Television, Cosmos Production announces the development of the Gothic Horror feature film, Chalice Island. Written by Writer-Producer Theresa Chaze, the project was originally conceived after a conversation with actor David Selby. A fan of both Dark Shadows and Selby, Chaze took his off-handed comment to heart and used plot threads left behind by Dan Curtis to weave a new feature. Combining new talent with the original actors, she continued the Collins' family legacy, However, when Chaze had been unable to attain rights to Dark Shadows, she edited out those elements to create an entirely new project.

Even after being off the air for nearly 50 years, Dark Shadows continues to have a strong and loyal fan base. It has launched several networks, including the SyFy Channel. The conventions continue to draw fans from around the world, More of a parody than a continuation of the Dark Shadows brand, the 2012 feature angered and frustrated the fans, which is why it failed at the box office. Yet the brand remains strong and viable in spite of the “movie that shall not be named.” Chalice Island cannot replace Dark Shadows. It wouldn't even try. What it will do both as a feature film and the pilot for a new series is stay true to the original Dark Shadows, buy continuing the tradition of Gothic Horror, Romance, and cliffhangers.

With characters ranging in age from 10 to 60+ with the primary age range between 20 and 50, Chalice Island will cross age demographics. It will attract the prized 18-49 year old demographic while enticing the fan bases with the original actors who have been cast fully developed and substantial roles.. The new characters include the 20-somethings Julia, Jonathan, Davy, Constance, and Katheryn's children, The list of 30-50-year-old characters include Susanna, Joe, Joshua, and Cheryl, Ethnic inclusiveness will be woven into the fabric with a strong Native American presence and the ethnic diversity of Katheryn's grandchildren.

Jacqueline's capacity to love is only exceeded by her need for vengeance after she finds her mother raped and murdered. When a source of evil offers both her and her brother, Jackson, the means to gain revenge, they enthusiastically embrace the dark arts. After 150 years of blood sacrifices, she meets Morgan. His love heals her old wounds. Hiding the chalice, she breaks the cycle of blood. Although Jackson could have stopped, them, he chooses to allow Jacqueline and Morgan to escape. His act of compassion costs him dearly. Decades later, Frank finds Jacqueline and Morgan on a small Reservation. Over the decades, she has earned grace. As long as she refrains from using her powers, she will remain untouchable. Yet, Frank knows her true weakness. His first attempt on her children only served to make Jacqueline more obsessive and controlling over their safety. Her smothering made her son, Jonathan, angry and vulnerable. As the clock winds down, Frank sends the vampire that he created to bring him to Chalice Island. Jacqueline and Morgan return to find their past has not been forgotten or forgiven. Frank demands that she return the chalice. If she returns it, he will release the ancient evil. If she refuses, her son will become a vampire that she will either have to kill or force him to live in eternal confinement. If she uses her power to save her son, she forfeits her grace, erasing her life with Morgan, their children, and all the good she had done. Jackson remains the wild card. Only Bailey knows he has returned. Which side will he take or does he have an agenda all his own.

Chalice Island, the series will continue the drama, suspense, and romance. The plot twists will create as many questions as it does answers. Will the vampire, Davy retain control over Jonathan or will the mysterious Constance steal him from her? Jonathan finds himself torn between the two women, yet he finds himself attracted to forbidden love. They thought they prevented Jon from becoming a vampire by performing the ritual and cremating his body. Yet Jackson's interference kept his soul from finding peace. As he reaches out to his wife, Katheryn, she becomes determined to bring him back by whatever means necessary. Will she reach out to the ancient evil? Or like Jackson, will she find another way? Did the ghosts of his victims take their revenge on Frank or did he find sanctuary? All these questions and more will be answered in the first season of Chalice Island.

Chalice Island: The rebirth of the Dark Shadows Gothic Horror

Some of you know that I am a writer and producer who tried to get the DS rights so I could produce a new feature that was more in line with the series. I wasn't able to get them so I edited out the DS and created a completely new project. Chalice Island can't replace Dark Shadows,. But it will continue the tradition with the same kind of suspense, romance, and wicked cliffhangers.

I would like everyone to like and share its Facebook page so that I can prove to the investor that there is still an audience. https://www.facebook.com/ChaliceIsland/

Chalice Island Synopsis

Ignoring the tribal warning, the Cornwall and Hamilton families moved onto an uninhabited island. Their arrogance and ignorance released an ancient evil. Working together with a Shaman, they were able to again imprison it, but in doing so their families became the key to its confinement.

Decades later, before Mildred could stop him, Alberto Stanford broke the seal and swore allegiance to the evil entity. He sealed the pact with her blood. Devastated by their mother's death, Jacqueline and Jackson's grief quickly turned into a murderous rage. Alberto easily manipulated them into blaming a union soldier. Sacrificing him opened their souls to the Master's evil. Mixing their blood with his in the chalice sealed their allegiance. For nearly 150 years they traveled the world, returning each year to perform the blood ritual, which reaffirmed their loyalty. One always needed to remain on the island to maintain control over the family interests and to protect the chalice.

In 1970, it was Jacqueline's turn to stay behind. Claiming to be her daughter, she came to visit her “cousin” Alberto. After faking his death, he and Jackson left. Instead of moving into the Hamilton Manor, Jacqueline reclaimed her parents home. Although, neglected and badly in need of major repairs, she was drawn to the happy memories of her parents. Her dedication to the restoration intrigued Morgan Cornwall. At first, she sent him away. But his playful flirtation reawakened the girl she had been before finding mother's raped and murdered body. In Morgan's eyes, she found the same love she saw between her parents. Her heart began to heal. The first time she chose to stay, Jackson was curious. The second time, Jackson also remained. He needed to know why she had chosen to age normally instead of reclaiming her youth. After meeting Bailey. he understood and he too began to heal.

Suspicious, Alberto returned. In an attempt to regain control, he uses his black magic to terrorizes the island. The evidence trail led first to Jacqueline and then Jackson. Instead of countering with her black magic, Jacqueline hides chalice. She and Morgan run for their lives. Enraged, the Master gives Alberto the length of this life to retrieve the chalice and bring Jacqueline before him. If he fails, he will face the wrath for all three. Before Jackson could escape with Bailey, Alberto transformed himself into Frank and enchanted Bailey into marrying him. Vowing revenge, Jackson leaves.

Working through others, Frank finally finds Jacqueline and Morgan on a small Reservation. Over the decades, she has earned grace. As long as she refrains from using her powers, she will remain untouchable. Yet, Frank knows her true weakness. His first attempt on her children only served to make Jacqueline more obsessive and controlling over their safety. Her smothering made her son angrier and more resentful of being confined to the Reservation.

As the clock winds down, Frank sends the vampire that he created to bring her son to Chalice Island. Jacqueline and Morgan return to find the past has not been forgotten or forgiven.

Are we there yet?

We have all have either been or been in a car with an annoying kid in the backseat, who chanted “are we there yet?” for the entire trip. By the end of the trip, the rest of the people in the car are looking for large pieces of duct tape. The constant nagging and focusing on the destination took the fun out of the trip for everyone.

But how many of us, when it comes to our goals and dreams, are the same bratty kid?  We are so intent on the achieving it that we put on blinders.  We may be more focused and disciplined, yet in the process, we limit our options.  In the military, they call it target blindness. Pilots become so fixated on the target that they can't see the obstacles and fly right into them.  However, it's not just the fun of the journey, but other opportunities and solutions that we can no longer see.  By taking a broader and wider perspective we open our mind to more constructive alternatives that could actually be more beneficial in achieving our goals.

I have been returning to the film and television industries as a writer and producer.  I have been away for a long time, so I've had to make new contacts.  As the Executive Producer finding the resources as well as the cast and crew are major parts of the job, especially when it comes to funding.  Along this journey back, I've met some amazing people.  I was also able to update my skills.  Yet at the end of the day, the funding or lack thereof would determine if the day was successful.  Even though I had made some amazing contacts, including with those in the industry that I greatly admire and who are well respected, how I graded the day depended on that one criterion.  I was the annoying the kid in the back seat.

So how did I change it? Simple. I took a step back and looked at the whole picture. When I did I started to see my own pattern of behavior, but I also started to see how the individual pieces were fitting together to create a mosaic of talents and resources. In doing so, it took the pressure of me to do it all myself, which reduced my stress and gave me a fresh perspective. I was able to see the open doors that I previously overlooked.  Amazing things have been happening since. I'm enjoying this leg of the journey.  We aren't quite there yet, but soon we will be and then the next leg of amazing adventure will begin.

Sometimes Shit Just Happens

Something shit happens that is totally beyond our control.   However, it is within our power to create a positive or negative situation, depending on how we react.   My kitchen faucet suddenly decided to fail. I had replaced it less than six months early.  Anyone who has changed them out knows it's not it's not complicated, but working around and under the sink is awkward.  It can be more than a little frustrating.  I buy the new one, but I can't find the right tool that would have made it a little easier.  So I make do.  After three hours of bumping elbows, scraping knuckles, and a lot of swearing,  it's installed, but the connection to the sprayer leaks.  The harder I try, the more frustrated I become.  Since it only leaks when the water is in use, I take a break. A couple of hours later, I try again.  But instead of making it better, it's worse.  But giving up is no longer an option.  I take everything apart and start over.  Instead, of attaching the sprayer I use the plug.  It would have been nice to have the sprayer, but not having it wasn't a big deal.  It was simply easier.    After a little work, the second time worked. The faucet worked!

So I am cleaning up the mess and the broom breaks. Here I'm standing in the middle of my kitchen with a broom handle in my hand and the bristle part laying on the floor.  If it had a tongue it would have been sticking out at me.  It would have been easy to have a tantrum—to rage against the unfairness.  It would have been justified after what happened to the sink.  But all I could think was—oh crap!  Deal with it at that moment would have just been pointless because it would have just added to the frustration and stress level.  I set it aside and finished cleaning up the best I could.   The next day I kept coming back to it.  The handle and bristles were perfect except for the fact that they were no longer connected.  The tape didn't work.  There are some things that even duck tape can't fix.  The second try was more successful.  I drilled three holes through the plastic casing of the bristles into the handle and used wood screws to reattach the handle. The concept worked.  The practical application had a few flaws.  The sweeping loosened the screws.   Plan C was a modification of plan B.  I drilled two more holes.  This time all the way through both. Instead of screws, I used bolts with nuts.  The combination kept the handle from moving and thus prevent it from working its way loose.  The finished product looks a little strange, but it is sturdier than before.

The moral to this adventure is how we react determines the outcome of a challenge.  At each step, I had a choice.  I could get mad and give up or I could step back and seek alternative solutions.  By refusing to give up, I proved that when we step back and keep a clear head, we can find alternative solutions that actually improve a situation.   We just have to choose to be open to not only thinking outside the box but also ripping it apart to makes something completely new.

New Chapter

Many people rush to evaluate their performance at the end of the chapters of their lives. However, that is where the testing takes place. The evaluations or the grading needs to take place at the beginning of the new chapter. Rushing to judgment distorts the results with false positives or negatives. There needs to be time and space to gain perspective. The new chapters begin by setting the stage for what comes next. What is the new challenge? Once the agenda has been set, you have to format the plan of attack so to speak. What worked or didn't work last time. What lessons were learn? Which weren't? Those that weren't why what needs to be done differently and how does it apply to the challenges of the new chapter.
I've started the new chapter. The last couple of weeks I have been evaluating--sorting through the data, lessons, and results. Most of the challenges of the last chapter have been met; a few are being carried forward but in a new context. I've learned a great deal about leadership along the way, what to do, but more importantly what not to do.
Leadership is a balancing act.
Flexibility and schedule. Those that strictly adhere to the agenda miss opportunities. Sometimes you need to pivot to take the scenic route to get to your destination. It might be longer in distance, but shorter in time. Plus, you never know what bonus points you will earn along the way.
Compassion and discipline. A leader who bullies to get the job done isn't truly a leader but merely a bully with power. Sometimes you have to reshuffle to find the good fit. Sometimes you have to put in the extra effort. Sometimes the best you can do for everyone do is bless and let go. Those who put profits over people find that they lack the good of both. Treat your workers like people and everyone wins.
Teams need balance, which means every member has to be grounded and centered. Trade school and a targeted education are great for teaching the skills, but they fail to create a grounded and centered person that are necessary for success. The arts, math, sciences, and other required subjects of a college or university are necessary because they create multi-fascet people. Diverse knowledge and training uplifts and adds dimension a person. Life experience is also a necessary element to a well-rounded individual, especially for leaders Those who haven't had to fight to survive by living paycheck to paycheck don't have the empathy to be a strong leader.
You can't teach what you don't know.. Good leaders have a working knowledge of every aspect of the job, but they hired the right people to do it and get out of the way.
Stress kills productivity and profitability. Stress happens because unexpected shit happens. How you react to it determines the end result. Running around screaming and pointing fingers only makes the situation more difficult. Identify the challenge, the solution, fix it, and only then do you look for reasons it happened, which will lead to preventative measures. Laying blame at the beginning terminates the creative solution process.
A little gratitude goes a long way.
My new chapter has begun.

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery, which kept them safe and strong. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. This interaction will help them rebuild that sense of brother and sisterhood they depended on while serving, which will help them reclaim their civilian lives. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them information as well as permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

With the tagline, “When a mother eats her own, no one is safe,” Eye of Ra compares to The Exorcist and Amityville Horror.

Katherine was born with the power to control the elements. Her whistle called the winds. Her tears refreshed the earth. She was able to see into the realms where fools and angels fear to tread. Her daughter, Sandra, was born with gifts that were complementary—or they should have been. Sandra had the ability to nurture and heal. Her gifts gave her the ability to see and heal others' pain. She could foresee their destinies and give them the courage to embrace their futures Yet, it was not enough. Sandra wanted more direct control over the world and the realms beyond. When her daughters' developed the gifts she craved, Sandra's envy turned to hatred. When a voice from the dark void reached out and asked, “What would you do to have their power. Sandra replied, “Whatever it takes.”

Kidnapped as a child, Rikki is forced to defend her life from her envious mother, who is more than willing to kill to steal her spiritual gifts. When Rikki escapes, Sandra turns her attention to others, who are more vulnerable. Can Rikki find the strength and courage to once again face her mother and stop her or will Sandra use Rikki's guilt to weaken her to the point that she is unable to save herself or anyone else?

A scripted television series, Operation Home Base combines the best of MASH, The Waltons, and NCIS to create a family of man drama about forgiveness and second chances.

A medic in the U.S Army, Martin Flying Crow returned from Vietnam a wounded soul, who was haunted by the ghosts and the guilt of his own actions. He quickly learned that there were more like him than the nation wanted to acknowledge. Unable to heal his own wounds, Flying Crow vowed to help other veterans find the peace he never expected to find for himself. Through a series of coincidences, several others joined his crusade and expanded it. Through their combined efforts, Operation Home Bases legally becomes a non-profit organization that moves out of Martin's garage and into an old shop. When Pat Bogley asks them to learn the truth of his son's disappearance while on a routine patrol in Afghanistan, their inquiries led them dangerously close to exposing a truth that many powerful people at home and abroad would do whatever it takes to keep hidden. When slander and threats do not deter Operation Home Base, Valhalla is created to offer unlimited financial and logistical support. Valhalla's generous offer will either be the carrot to divert the investigation or the stick to destroy Operation Home Base from the inside out.

The second-year slate would include the second seasons of both televisions series, plus the following features.

Riding Fences: Western

When his mother dies while Tom is away at college, his grief turns to rage and he turns his back on his father and brother. He only returns decades later when he is given the opportunity for revenge. By the time he learns the truth, it may be already too late to undo the damage his has done to their family's heritage ranch.

Swamp Rats: Drama Thriller

They rode together. They fought together. They played together. They were the Swamp Rats until a lie ripped them apart. When the doctor gave him the long face, Willie realizes that he has little time to prevent the truth from going to the grave with him. In an attempt make it right, he tricks the Swamp Rats into riding together again. Willie hopes there is enough of their old friendship left to save two old friends and a daughter that one of them never knew he had.

Press Releases: What you don't want you to know can hurt you

Having a provocative opening to your press release will only catch your readers attention for a moment. Press releases need to be more than just the who, what, where, when, and why. They must capture the reader attention in the first paragraph, while still providing all the necessary information.

No matter what venue for which it has been written, a press release must pack a great deal of information in short, quick to read pieces that are tightly formatted. The first paragraph attracts and catches the readers attention by setting the stage. The second paragraph goes into detail about the what it is and why it is important or unique. The third focuses on the who is involved and why they a credible. The fourth summarized the release, hitting the high points, while reinforcing the who, what, where, when, and why.

However, misleading or poorly structured releases will garner negative reactions from readers. At best, they won't finish reading it. At worse, it will leave the reader with a negative option of the message, making release totally counterproductive. Correct spelling and grammar prove professionalism and give credibility as does the correct usage of words not only for definition but also for basic context.

Catchy phrases and intriguing opening paragraphs will attract readers, but it takes a well-crafted press release to keep their attention. Keep it simple. Keep it concise. Keep it professional.

Should television make a profit?

As the creator and Executive Producer of Horses and Heroes, I need to clarify the purpose and parameters of Horses and Heroes. It has never has been a non-profit company. Horses and Heroes combine equine therapy with peer support therapy to create an unscripted TV series that will empower veterans to reclaim their lives. Each season, eight veterans will come together with the hosts, Craig Sawyer and Tim Abell along with the Therapists on the hosting ranch and the team therapist, Dave Ferruolo. They will work together to identify and address their core issues. Unlike most in the genre, Horses and Heroes is all about healing and forward movement. Yesterday, I was accused to trying to make a profit off others' pain. The owner of a ranch said, "It is immoral to capitalize on the recovery of our wounded veterans." I debated with myself about how to or if I should address this accusation. Staying silent and letting it slid would only add credence to her charges.
Horses and Heroes is a production company that's sole purpose is to produce the unscripted TV series, Horses and Heroes. It is a for-profit company that is looking for equity investors and a corporate cross-branding partner. Although we wouldn't turn down donates, we are not actively seeing them out. Investors, expect and deserve to make a profit on their investment. That is why they invest. The corporate partnership with television programming has been around since the beginning of television. Texaco Star Theater and Mutual of Omaha's the Wild Kingdom are only two examples. We are offering an updated and active version of what was done before.
As for the morality of making a profit off the pain and recovery of others, the same could be said of everyone in medicine from the janitor to the CEOs, lawyers, drug manufacturers, including those who do the research, those in the funeral industry--all of them and more make a profit of the physical and emotional challenges of others. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to donate to the non-profits such as this ranch.
We will be hiring veterans for both in front of and behind the cameras. We will be paying a fair wage plus covering the travel, housing, and food expenses during the production, including for the eight veterans going through the therapy on air. The ranch will be paid a sizeable location fee as well as receiving a great deal of promotion. After the show. we will be arranging aftercare for the veterans who went through the therapy. Everyone wins, especially those veterans, who watch the show and seek help afterward.

Are Veterans are More than a Marketing Tool for Veterans Day?

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day.  Once again, there are a rash of sales that have nothing to do with helping veterans or veterans' organizations.  They are merely using them as a marketing tool to sell their products.

As a writer and producer, I honor military personnel and veterans in my work.  It's why I created Horses and Heroes and Operation Home Base.  Both TV series tell the stories of those, who have and continue to serve.

Horses and Heroes combines Equine Therapy with Peer Support Therapy as eight veterans per season support each other as they reclaim their lives.  Unlike most in the genre, it supports healing and positive forward movement rather than endorsing bad behavior.

The scripted series, Operation Home Base combines the best elements of MASH, The Waltons, and NCIS to create a family of man drama about forgiveness and second chances. By combining real life stories with a fictional international conspiracy, OHB  builds a bridge of understanding between civilians and those who serve.

Horses and Heroes is first on the slate.  We have two amazing hosts: Tim Abell and Craig Sawyer as well as a therapist/veteran coordinator, Dave Ferruolo.  All three are veterans as will be most of the crew.

We need your help. We need introductions to investors and corporations that would like to market there product, while supporting those who serve, in socially responsible way.  But  even if you don't have wealthy friends, who invest or contacts within corporations, you can still help.  The proceeds from my books bought on the website will be used to fund Horses and Heroes.  You can buy the PDFs and recommend others do the same.  They are inexpensive, but every little bit helps.  If you have a little extra, you can donate it to the production fund on the website.  You have the power to make a the difference.
