Horses and Heroes: Peer Support Saves Lives

Horses and Heroes is a reality TV series, which promotes healing rather than bad behavior. Although Equine Therapy will be the stage, the focus will remain on the veterans and how their lives as well as those of their families were changed by the physical and emotional challenges brought into their lives by war.

Veterans supporting veterans has always been more effective than working with civilian therapists. They have been there and done that, which is why they know when to cut slack and when to call the other on the BS.

Each season, Horses and Heroes will bring together eight veterans, who want to reclaim their lives from their physical and emotional challenges. They will support each other as they work with the horses and tell their stories.

Veterans can't go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end. Together they will give each other the strength and courage they need to change their directions of their lives toward the new end.

Why should we help veterans?

Recently I was interviewed on a Southern California radio station.  The topic was our documentary Horses and Heroes.  Although, I am very grateful for the opportunity, between my nervousness and the time limit we weren't able to properly cover the who, what, when, how, and why of Horses and Heroes.  I was able to cover the first four in very general terms.  It was the why that I found myself unable properly answer on air.

Military personnel and veterans are people.  They are not disposable parts of the war machine.  They are not marketing tools to increase corporations' bottom lines.   They are more than the selfless heroes that John Wayne portrayed or Sylvester Stallone's out of control outcast Rambo.  Neither character matches the reality of who military personnel and veterans are as individuals.  As with all large groups of people, there are members who are good, bad, and ugly, yet the media seems to just focus on the two extremes, instead of the telling the stories of the real people.

No matter what branch of service, military personnel and veterans are mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters.  They are our families and our friends.  They are individuals with unique talents and dreams, who chose to stand between our nation and harm's way.  In doing so, they not only permanently changed their lives, but also the lives of those who love them.   For many the life of service is a family tradition that goes back generations.  For them it is more than a job, it is a matter of honor and pride.  It is their way of life.

There are corporations who see military personnel, veterans and their families merely in the terms of marketing demographics.  Their generic messages are tweak to make their products appear to be target audience specific, yet the only thing military about the product is the advertising campaign.  However, not all businesses are looking to exploit military personnel and veterans.  There are many companies, who honestly support them.  Their products specifically focus on the needs and life challenges of those who serve and are more than just another Veteran's Day Car Saleathon.  It may not seem so, but there is a difference between the two.  The former puts their bottom line first and foremost, leaving the human element to be nothing more an after thought.  The latter puts the people first by providing necessary products and services; in doing so they create a balance between human needs and profitability.

Horses and Heroes started as an episode for our TV documentary series about horses, Spirit of a Nation.  However, in doing the research, I learned there was enough information as well as a need for both.  The episode for Spirit of a Nation will encompass all aspects of Equine Therapy; while Horses and Heroes will focus on the how working with the horses helps military personnel and veterans face their physical and emotional challenges.  Horses and Heroes will provide dual benefits.  Not only will it share the personal stories about the effectiveness of Equine Therapy, but we will also be give jobs to veterans already in the entertainment industry and opening the door for those who are looking for a new career.

We all serve in our own way.  Although I would be best described as a Fobbit (It is the equivalent to REMF).  Although the term is derogatory, in my case it is also accurate.    I'm only really capable of shooting off my mouth, but I am very good at it.  I'm a story teller, who tells the tales of those who face their fears and make a difference. I am a researcher that can ferret out accurate information and separate it from BS.  As a producer and editor, I tie it all together in such a way that even civilians can understand.   I might not be able to pull a trigger, but I can back up those who do.

Help for Veterans

It has been known by many names. During the Civil War, it was called “Soldier's Heart”. During World War II they called it "Shell Shock". It has also been called "Combat Fatigue". The current label is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PSTD.

In the past, it was down played. Sufferers were told to man up. They were medicated, but instead of healing the medication turned them into zombies and never dealt with the core issues. Many have tried Talk Therapy. Results were limited. Most military personnel thought that only one who had walked the walk could possibly understand the emotional and physical toil of war. Buddy therapy is effective, but it is also limited by location and the number of veterans available to help.

Animal Assisted Therapy has been extremely effective for those who are physically and emotionally challenged. It has become more widely used in cases of PTSD, especially for veterans. Although almost any animal can be a healer, dogs and horses are the ones most commonly partnered with veterans. Dogs have the advantage of being accepted in both cities and rural areas. However, horses are known to better reflect the mood of the person handling them. This ability helps the PSTD patient to learn how to recognize their own feelings. In this way, they learn how to retrain their mind and body reacts to stressers.

A semi-scripted documentary Horses and Heroes has a personable host, who has a diverse military background as well as experience working with horses. She will be chatting with the staff of Charity Hills Ranch as well as with some of the veterans, who have gone through the program. They will be sharing their personal physical and emotional challenges as well as how working with the horses helped them heal.

Horses and Heroes focuses on the human element It gives an alternative option, which can heal the whole person instead of just focusing on symptoms. It is a non addictive way to get their lives back. Horses and Heroes fills a void and need, because it helps those grappling with situations brought into their lives due to traumatic events find new ways to cope with them. It puts emotions back into documentaries and will leave the audience with alternative answers to their physical and emotional challenges.

Saving a Veteran's Therapy Dog

I'm asking everyone to help make a difference for this vet and his dog.  Please call and protest.  Dutch was protecting himself.  What I would like to know is why the attacker, the person who was beating Dutch, hasn't been arrested and prosecuted?

An Army Veteran with disabilities is asking for the public's help in saving his service dog, Dutch, from court-ordered euthanasia. After being punched, kicked, and hit with a metal pole for several minutes, Dutch bit his attacker and has now been accused of being a "vicious" dog.

Dutch is a 4-year-old American Allaunt, who is a registered service dog and an important part of Jeremy Aguilar's life. According to the Aguilars, Dutch has never shown any aggressive behavior before or after the incident and is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen.

Jeremy served in the Army, and fought in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also was also deployed to Hurricane Katrina with the Oklahoma National Guard, which was the first unit to show up. Dutch came into Jeremy’s life a month after he married his wife Heather three years ago. Heather says that Dutch has been "the most therapeutic thing that could have ever happened" to her husband.

The goal is to create quality movies that people want to watch. Many have reduced the industry down to a formula.
People aren't that simple; they can't be reduced down to a balance sheet. Described as a woman who has the courage to play with dragons, Theresa Chaze has gone where fools and angels fear to tread and has flourished. Her site is at www.theresachaze.com
Courage isn't the lack of fear, but the ability to set it aside and  focus on what is truly important
