Direct Marketing to Independent Bookstores

Direct Marketing to Independent Bookstores
By
Theresa Chaze

Active book promotion and marketing is important to every book's success, especially when it comes to the beginning writer. Contacting independent bookstores is a direct marketing method that is not only cost effective but a successful way for the authors to bring their work to the attention of buyers. With the technological advancements of email, fax and unlimited long distance, it is easier and cheaper than ever before for authors to promote their work to brick and mortar stores.

In the past, authors used direct mailings and industry advertisements to gain the attention of independent bookstore owners. It was a costly and slow process. Not only was it expensive to print full color flyers, but the increasing postage rates made snail mail direct marketing cost prohibitive. Placing ad in trade magazines is effective only if the ad is well placed and designed. Yet even then, the message would only reach those stores that subscribed to the magazine or service.

The internet has opened the door to direct marketing to bookstores by making it cheaper, easier and quicker. Most stores have websites, which contain their contact information as well as accurate descriptions of the books they sell. It is an easy way for the author to reach their target audience by approaching only the stores who carry their genre. By searching the net, an author can find stores by state or specialty. However, compiling list of bookstores can be very time consuming and frustrating. There is no master site that lists bookstores. Instead, the search must be done by location or genre.

If an author is wise, she or he will create a list of the bookstores as they are contacted, not only to check back with them but for future use. However, there are short cuts that an author can take. There are sites that do sell lists of bookstores; however, they are very expensive and have been assembled by non writers. Valkyrie Publishing is offering the list it uses to promote their books. This list has contact information for over 2000 independent bookstores. Most of them have not only the contact information, but also details about the store itself. Below are examples of what the list contains.

Solution for the Book Marketing Conundrum

Solution for the Book Marketing Conundrum

In these challenging times, authors like everyone else are being forced to streamline their marketing campaigns. Yet the need to promote has become increasingly more important to a book’s success, creating a conundrum for authors, publishers and public relations firms alike. Every dollar spend must be maximized to its fullest in order to reach not only the specific target audience but the general reading public as well. With the increasing number of venues available for videos, book video or book trailers have become the most valuable and cost effective way to promote books of all genres.

An effective book trailer is very much like the movie trailers in the theatres. Using graphics, music and voice-overs, book trailers create a multi-media experience that tempts the reader to seek out the book. Unlike TV commercials, these advertisements are not limited by the traditional two minute breaks in programming, nor do they require additional payment for each airing. Once produced, they can be uploaded and shared without any additional cost. In addition, the site link can be sent out in viral emails, which further increase its effectiveness and broaden its target audience.

As with all information, once a trailer is uploaded on the net, it remains there until it is physically removed. With unlimited viewing potential, this tool has become the most successful in the online book marketing and promotion toolbox. Whether it is watched once or a million times, the production and distribution costs remain the same.

Although there are an increasing number of book trailer producers, Valkyrie Publishing has become one of the front runners for not only their quality but also their creativity when it comes to scripts, production and distribution for books of all genres. Using all three elements, voice-overs, music and graphics, Valkyrie has produced trailers for authors, publishers and PR firms. Why settle for a two dimensional media experience when there is a cost effective way to have all three. To watch the trailers and videos Valkyrie has previous produced go to http://www.youtube.com/user/Tirgana. Valkyrie Publishing Produces Cost Effective Online Promotions for Authors

Valkyrie Publishing Receives Praise from Authors, Publishers and PR Firms

Traverse City-Valkyrie Publishing offers cost effective video production services for not only books but also other products and services. With the increasing number of sites, which offer video placement, online marketing and promotion is now available no matter how small of a budget.

Book trailers, also called book videos, are the wave of the future when it comes to book marketing and promotions. Whether self published, POD or traditionally published, book trailers give a professional look to books of all genres. They are cost efficient and effective tools for online marketing that the traditional press release cannot compete with.

Using voice-overs, graphics and music, trailers enhance the promotional message by adding additional layers of information. When properly produced, the trailer adds dimensional qualities, which include both the visual and auditory senses. By combining the elements into a single cohesive package, the producer creates a product that is not only more appealing, but also longer lasting.

Founder and CEO of Valkyrie Publishing, Theresa Chaze is not only a novelist and screen writer, but also a video producer, director and editor. She has several novels available and her screenplays have won awards. In addition, she has years of experience working in broadcast television. By combining her talents and her experience, she is able to product trailers that are unique, effective and cost efficient. Examples of her work can be viewed at

http://www.youtube.com/user/Tirgana and she can be contacted at Tirgana at yahoo.com.

Her current and past clients have the following to say about the work Valkyrie Publishing has done for them.

"Theresa Chaze has the experience and know how to turn out quality high-performing book trailers. I am very pleased with the work she has done for us at Pump Up Your Book Promotion!"
Dorothy Thompson, CEO & Founder Pump Up Your Book Promotion

Theresa's book trailers are creative, compelling and very competitively priced. Her placement of these on various online sites goes way beyond YouTube. Authors can be assured that her book trailers will help elevate their book from the printed word. I recommend her book trailer services.

Theresa put together a book trailer for my novel MRS. LIEUTENANT that was an original -- not simply a cookie-cutter book trailer that could fit almost any book. She took the time to research the era of the Vietnam War and then used her research to craft a quality book trailer whose script, graphics and music reflected the tension of the time when the novel takes place.

I would definitely use Theresa again to do a book trailer for me, and I particularly appreciated the open communication between her and myself that allowed me to have input on the trailer.

Theresa Chaze produced my book trailer and I was stunned at how wonderfully she captured, truly captured, the spirit of my book! Others have contacted me to tell me what a wonderful book trailer I had and the raves continue to come in. Ms. Chaze is not only astute but sensitive to the driving force of authors and their books. Ms. Chaze is president of Valkyrie Publishing. Look out world! Authors have a real voice now and the PR industry will never be the same again!--Cate Cavanagh, author of Her Godmother. I enthusiastically take great pleasure in recognizing the fine professional services of Theresa Chaze and her wonderful, Book Trailer Production Services. I am a recipient of her great talent in which she has provided visual services in promoting my book. Aside from my very strong endorsement, a literary colleague mentioned upon witnessing, Theresa Chaze's fine work on my book, suggested that all of my family and friends view my website www.angusrmunro.com - under Angus Munro on You Tube. Her services to me, can best be described as, "The icing on the cake!"

In the past few years I have been extremely fortunate to have Theresa
working on the promotion and marketing of my novels. She has done
excellent creating video blurbs for You Tube and other places. Highly
imaginative and eye catching. Thanks to her my books sales have
been higher than expected.

Theresa is a writer and published author herself. She truly understands
the needs of other writers at all levels. Her experience allows her to be
focused and aware of what it takes to get published and promoted
nowadays. I am honored to be able to give her book trailer services a
glowing recommendation. Especially because she has helped me so
wonderfully much.

Please be sure that Theresa will do her best for you and your works.
You definitely won't be disappointed.

For my memoir about taking care of my dying father-in-law, Theresa Chaze intuited exactly the mood & ambience. The seamless flow of photos, the music she chose & her tone of voice as she read excerpts were so exquisite they brought tears to my eyes. Made me see what I'd written in a whole new light. I highly recommend her services. The work and shear professionalism displayed by Theresa Chaze and Valkyrie Publishing in the book video production for my book Standing The Watch: The Greatest Gift was stunning. I will be very pleased to work with her again on my next book, The Dead Husband."

R. J. Brown, STANDING THE WATCH: The Greatest Gift.

I can't express how I felt when I saw that trailer! It embodied
everything that Street Lit is in general as a genre and that my novel is
in particular! You are a true Wiccan priestess

Effective Online Marketing Tool

Book Trailer: An Effective Promotional and Marketing Tool
By
Theresa Chaze

Book trailers are more than images set to music, nor do they just a recap of the book synopsis. In fact, they are an effect promotional tool that will create interest by going beyond the synopsis to the "heart of the book. Although, book trailers are considered promotional material, they are in reality an advertisement. The difference lies in the length and basic format.

Most book trailers are much longer than most conventional ads, running 1-5 minutes long, while currently most broadcast ad are 30 seconds. It would be too costly to run longer ads in prime time on the local or national level. Even well know writers such as Stephen King, only run 15 second national ads. They are quick in-out ad, which do little more than announce a new book However, book trailers are designed for the internet, where the venues are either free or low cost. Length is not a consideration; therefore, they can be more detailed both in content and style. The quality both in the writing and production can make the trailer an asset or a major liability. Being clever and unique can create a buzz about the trailer, which will in turn increase sales. However, if the trailer is merely random images set to music, it will make the author look amateurish.

The message has to do more than recap the synopsis. It has to be in itself a creative work that creates layers of interest. Whether as text or a voiceover, the message needs to tantalize the readers into buying the book. In the case of fiction, the trailer is a vignette with a beginning and middle, but the end is left hanging as a question. Its purpose is to introduce the lead characters and plot, while building up the conflict of the story, so that the readers will want to answer the question--what happens next? In non-fiction, most books have more of a targeted audience. The text will want not only to provide the author’s credentials, but also put forth her or his thesis, while hinting why it is different from ever other expert in the field. Both formats will want to provide reviews, ordering information, and run credits back to any person or site that provided resources for the trailer.

Multi-sensory devices such as videos, still pictures and voiceovers, all coordinated with music as the video trailer create layers of information that combine into a single effective ad. The video transitions and effects have to be appropriate for the message and match the audio portion of the piece. Both can create a sense of movement in still photographs, making them look more movie like. The availability of digit cameras makes adding live action shots easy and inexpensive. In addition, there are sites on the net that inexpensively offer video clips. There are also sites that music can be download for free, if they are given credit and a link back. The music needs to create a sense of the book beyond the words. It can add drama, intensity or humor depending the style of the music. It is just one more way to enhance the feel and add depth to the trailer.

By coordinating the whole package to roll out in a logical, concise format, the trailer becomes a thought provoking, interest creating marketing tool. However, if written and produced well, it doesn’t have to be elaborate or highly technical; sometimes the simple direct approach is the most effective, if done professionally and with creative thought.

I have produced the following trailers not no only for my books, but for others authors as well. I am available for hire by emailing: Tirgana (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Writing to Activate the Readers Imagination

Writing to Activate the Readers Imagination
By
Theresa Chaze

Although novels are written in two dimensional black and white, the story actually happens in the four dimensional realms of the reader‘s mind. Multi-sensory books are the ones that become the most successful. Capturing your reader's imagination, by helping them to be able to see, hear, smell and feel every aspect of your story draws them and helps them experience the story through the characters.

Sight involves more than what the characters see or don’t see. It involves the subtle shades of color, shape, dimension and distance. A writer could write about “a new green leaf” or just as easily write that the “slow unfurling of the heart shaped leaf, contrasted against the darker older foliage of the plant.” Giving details doesn’t necessarily mean a long string of adjectives or adverbs, but a creative use of description that shows instead of tells.

Hearing is the most versatile of the senses. Sound or the lack of sound can also add to the story’s dept. What the character hears can extend her or his awareness beyond the immediate environment. Sound’s ability to travel great distances, allows remote action to be brought into a scene without disrupting the point of view. A wolf howling from somewhere in the night will be heard both in and out of the cabin. The characters inside don’t have to see it to know that the wolf lurks some where outside their door.

Touch can be experienced as a caress or a punch along with everything in between. However, touch is more than skin on skin, but it also includes any contact that is important to the story. The soft fur of cat rubbing against the character’s leg feels different than a skunk brushing passed while trying to escape. In the same way, the rough scales of an alligator feel different than the bark of a tree, so are reactions the images elicit in the reader.

The sense of taste is the most personal and individual. What one person finds appealing, another could just as easily find repulsive. How the character reacts will further define her or him. Most people are aware of the more common foods and drinks. If an author introduces something out of the ordinary, it is simple to you use comparisons to give the reader a sense of the taste and texture.

The sense of smells is the most effective way to activate memories and emotions. The two areas of the brain are closely related in location and synaptic connection. Using odors, either pleasant or unpleasant, is the fastest way to get a response out of the character in such a way that the reader will be able to relate.

Perception or intuition is the sixth sense that is frequently over looked by writers. This is not a reference to ESP or psychic gifts, but how a character sees or judges her or his world and everything in it. By showing how the character perceives her/himself and others, you define her or him without long descriptive sentences. The best example is a character that is afraid of other people; she or he may be paranoid or someone might actually be out to get her or him. By contrasting the perceptions with the reactions of the other characters, the writer reveals more about the personality and the inner motivation of the character.

In addition, similes, allegories and contrasting comparisons can add texture and set the mood. Sarah was as graceful as a bird is an example of simile. Like Amazon warriors of old, she marched into the room would be an allegory. While looking dapper and smart in his new suit, Dan smelled like down wind of a pig farm would be a contrasting comparison. All three examples give added information about the character in a pro-active way that allows the reader to visualize the character.

It is unusual for one sense to be used alone. More often than not, they are combined to give layers of images and sensations. Sight and hearing are frequently combined. A character hears a noise and starts looking for the source or a character smells something wonderful and decides to taste what is in the pot. By coalescing the senses, the author creates a four dimensional world on a two dimensional medium. It makes the characters and their environment more real and relatable for the reader, which in turn makes the novel more popular.

Four Aspects to Creating a Successful Marketing Tool

Four Aspects to Creating a Successful Marketing Tool

Although it is widely known that bad press is better than no press, bad advertising is worse than not placing ads at all. Whether print or media, a poorly crafted advertisement will reflected poorly on the product and all companies involved. Whether it is the message, the graphics or the venue, if the commercial isn't up to industry standards, it becomes a liability instead of an asset.

Advertisements have four features that need to be considered: message, graphics, technical quality and distribution venue. For the ad to be effective, all four need to emphasize the positive aspects of the product or service.

The message refers to the actual message. Whether print or audio, the message needs to be concise and complete within the time or space allotted. In both print and media, there isn't room for non-essential information. Print ads are limited to specific sizes. Over filing the space forces the print to a smaller font and crowds the space, making it difficult to read. For videos, if the audio is too complex or involved, it will make it difficult to keep the voice over understandable if the message spoken too quickly in order to fit the time. Yet the restrictions don’t necessarily have to limit the creative factor; it just makes it more of a challenge to the production team to be both unique and efficient in their thinking. The 1970’s saying--keep it simple stupid should be kept in mind at all times. By limiting the message to the most important information, it makes the final product more effective and in some cases thought provoking.

In print as well as video, the graphics need to be clear and accurately represent the product or service. Whether the company logo or an image of the product is used, the graphics need to be properly formatted to keep the original color and prevent distortion in the set up process. Not only does the ad need to be balanced to make it eye catching, but it also needs to properly reflect the product or service. Misrepresenting the size or abilities of the product will only lead to dissatisfied customers and possible legal issues.

The technical quality refers to the actual look of the commercial. Does the audio and graphics meet industry standards? Does the it positively reflect the product or service? The focal point needs to be the client’s message, not the cleverness of the production team. In print, the graphics and text need to be accurate and precise. Typos or smudges will not only affect the client’s reputation, but the venue’s as well. For both radio and television, the voice over levels need to be balanced so that the music enhances the voice over but doesn’t dominate it. Television has the added challenge of keeping the quality high in the video. Glitches or drop out will detract from the ad and lower its effectiveness. In addition, a badly edited piece with jump edits or badly shot video will make the product detract from the quality of the product or service as well.

Proper ad placement will also determine the effectiveness of the message. Placing a commercial in an improper venue will only waste time and money. Knowing the reader or viewership will enhance the effectiveness with the target audience, making it an asset to the client. Placing an ad for Harry Potter in a Christian venue will not reach the target audience, nor will placing a Christian ad in Charmed; No one will be converted by the message, but the more than one will be annoyed by it. However, placing the Harry Potter ad in the Charmed show would be accepted by their common audience, who would be more likely to buy the book or see the movie.

The whole point is to tell widget buyers about much better the client’s widgets are than their competition and how they can be purchased. An ad that successfully meets these four standards will be a benefit to the client’s product, thereby increasing sales.

Writing Tip: Read What you Write to Know Your Genre and Your Reader

Writing Tip: Read What you Write to Know Your Genre and Your Reader

The two biggest mistakes most authors make are not knowing their genre or their readers.

Without knowing the rules of the genre or what the readers expect when they pick up the book, the author won’t be able to be gain a following. In addition, readers have expectations when they pick up a novel. Although they require uniqueness in the characters, plot and conflict, the story structure needs to follow established genre guidelines. The author needs to tailor the characters, language and sentence structure based on the target audience of the genre; the only way for authors to successful achieve both standards is to become an expert by reading the genre.

There are many books available explaining the specific guidelines an author has to follow. Nevertheless, unless the author has read it, there is no way she or he can possibly understand the complexities or convincingly write the genre. Sci-fi has different standards than a mystery. Even though fantasy and Sci-fi share many common components, they are very different. However, unless the author not only reads but also studies them, she or he will not be able to effectively write them. Two things both genres share are that their readership is well read and not shy about pointing out mistakes. Romance novels on the surface seem to be the simplistic in their style, but in fact, they are the most complex. From the traditional romance to the soft porn, the characters, plots and conflicts have established blueprints. Unless the author has a full understanding of what is expected, there is no way she or he will be able to find a position in the marketplace, because they will not be able to meet the readership’s expectations.

Short stories are usually limited to having one primary genre; however, longer projects such as novels and novelettes have subplots, which can cross genre boundaries. Star Wars would be considered Science Fiction, yet it also contains the romance elements with the relationship between Lela and Han and the fantasy aspect of using the "force". Romances are frequently mixed with comedy. Mystery and horror are commonly paired. Both are just two examples of the cross breeding in genres. The more complex the novel becomes, the more important it is for the author to understand the ground rules for each of the genres she or he utilizes. By breaking the formatting rules in plot, character or conflict, the author looses creditability.

Knowing the target readership of the genre is one of the most important aspects of how the author structures the characters, plot, and conflict. The reader only sees what the author shows and tells. By focusing on the wrong element, the author will not only miss the bull’s eye, but the target all together. Gender, age, education and social background are all factors the author must keep in mind when laying out the story. Even through age, education and social background are the fine tuning elements when it comes to romance, women are still the primary readership. When writing romance, the author needs to be aware of difference in how women see the world differently then men. Women don’t have breast envy--shoes, purses, hair and male companion most definitely, but they don’t look at another woman’s boobs and think I wish I had a pair of those. That is a guy thing. A western targeted for men or boys will focus on the action, the horses and the gun battles; if it was written for women, the author will talk about the handsome stranger with the seductive eyes and firm butt. In order to successfully attract and keep your target’s attention, the author has to know who they are and what they expect.

Need a Book Trailer? Let me help you

Greetings,

The newest online marketing tool for authors is the book video, which is also called a book trailer. By combining video with a voice over and music, the author can promote not only their electronic book, but also their print books that are available through bookstores. More than an ad, the videos are able to go beyond the synopsis to give the reader a deeper understanding of the book. Trailers combined with SEO keywords make an effective marketing tool for both fiction and nonfiction books of all genres.

With the increasing number and the popularity of video sites, trailers are an effective and inexpensive way to promote books. Once it is produced, the trailer can be uploaded on an infinite number of sites without extra charge or loss of quality. YouTube is not the only social site that has the capacity for video promotion. Networks such as AOL, Yahoo, Google, and MSN are only several of the possible promotional opportunities. Each has their own networking system; however, these uploaded videos are a searchable by the major search engines giving them a far reaching capability.

Not only do I write scripts for book videos, I also produce them for myself and other authors. My resume includes Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Video production with a minor in Theatre. I have over six years experience in broadcast TV as a producer, director and all around tech. I have two novels in print, with a third due out this fall. In addition, I am an award winning screenwriter. Nearly two years ago, I decided to combine my experience by producing digital videos.

I work with authors, publishers, and PR representatives of all genres. The only books that I will not work with are those that promote hatred and bigotry. To see examples of what I can do for you please go to my YouTube site at http://www.youtube.com/user/Tirgana. Currently I am working for 20.00 an hour with a production time for each trailer running between 5-6 hours.

Please email me at Tirgana @ yahoo.com to learn more of what I can do for you.
