Memorial Day: Remembering the Unsung Heroes

Last Chance! If you haven't already been to the Illinois State Museum's Unsung Heroes Exhibit yet, it will be available until June 10, 2018, located at 502 South Spring Street, Springfield IL. With Memorial Day upon us, it is even more of a poignant time to experience this special exhibit. Among the heroes featured is Thomas R. Jones Senior who was an Illinois native and Navy Corpsman.

Thomas R. Jones, Vietnam Veteran/author/playwright/motivational speaker, led an extraordinary life in public service. Tom Jones ‘Career Legends’ were transposed into a Proclamation from the Illinois Senate and issued by IL Senate President John Cullerton “in recognition of his exemplary career and dedication to Illinois public service and his sacrifice for the civic good of our nation”.

In his later years, Jones was instrumental in being able to get Springfield designated as a Purple Heart city, Sangamon County a Purple Heart County, and Illinois a Purple Heart state.

Earlier in his career, Thomas Jones was assistant director of  Illinois Department Veteran Affairs in Governor Jim Thompson's cabinet. During that time Jones was an integral part in establishing the Vietnam Memorial here in Springfield, and also played a role in the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.  In D.C. he led his team where they were responsible for the Illinois contingency and were involved in some of the planning.

Thomas R. Jones Sr. was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Services Medal. His book, a historical fiction novel, the Lost Survivor tells the story of a marine corpsman of the Third recon battalion who spent most of his time in Da Nang.  His multimedia stage production Long Way Home was based on his novel.

This exhibit highlights his work as a veteran advocate in the Springfield area, Illinois, and the nation. Currently, photographs and artifacts from his life are still on display as part of the Unsung Heroes Exhibit at the Illinois State Museum through June 10, 2018. Please see the museum's website for more information at http://www.illinoisstatemuseum.org/content/unsung-heroes

Leaving Veterans Behind

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective peer support with Equine Therapy.  Each season will bring together eight veterans that will come from the broad veteran demographic. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions.    When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them the information they need to also heal.

These days, the emphasis has been on the veterans from the current conflicts; however, many of those from previous wars never had a chance to work through that they experienced.  They pigeonholed their lives and tried to leave their pain behind.  But now that they are reaching an age when they are starting to review their lives, that is no longer so easy to do.  For this reason, Horses and Heroes will not only attract the prized 18-35-year-old demographic, but also those who served in the Vietnam, Korean, and WWII.

While in service no brother or sister in arms behind.   Although most of the attention and support has been focused on the veterans from the current conflicts, many from the previous conflicts never receive the help and support they needed to heal through their physical and emotional pain.  Horses and Heroes will be bringing veterans of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and both genders together.  It’s never too late to heal and come back to the world.  Transportation, housing, food, and therapy as well as a small stipend for the eight veterans in the program will cost $3,500.00 for each.  We are asking for the support of individuals and organizations to help us with these costs.

Advertising is a necessary part of every successful business venture.  It not only makes the customers aware of the products available, but it also gives brand recognition. We are looking for corporate sponsorship to cross brand with Horses and Heroes.   Sponsoring Horses and Heroes through cross-branding will create positive PR in a cost effective manner, while setting an industry standard for social responsibility.  We are offering an updated version of cross-branding Mutual of Omaha did with its sponsorship of The Wild Kingdom.  In doing so, we will be combining old school with today’s promotional techniques to create a whole new marketing tool.

Supporting Horses and Heroes helps to make sure no veteran no veteran is left behind.  Please join our team by sponsoring a veteran or by cross branding with Horses and Heroes.  There are also investment opportunities still available.

Patriotism for Profit

November 11 is a day to honor those who have served our nation during peace time as well as war. However, it has been corrupted by those who put profits over people by turning it into another marketing tool.

To learn more how you can help veterans find new coping skills for their physical and emotional challenges visit Horses and Heroes' website

Horses and Heroes is not about pointing fingers or creating a political firestorm. It can’t fix the system nor will is a cure all. What it will do is show that there are alternatives, which more effectively help military personnel and veterans to heal their way home. They can't go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from the now and make a brand new end. We want veterans and military personnel to know that we have their back.

Veterans Telling the Real Stories and Healing Their Way Home

Horses and Heroes is not about pointing fingers or creating a political firestorm.  It is a documentary series, which will help military personnel and veterans find a new way to cope with the physical and emotional challenges brought into their lives by war.  Equine Therapy does not involve drugs nor lying on a couch and spilling their guts to a therapist.  What it does do is help them find new ways to see and react to their emotional triggers.  It helps their bodies remember how it used to work.  It can't replace what was lost, but it can give them the confidence to see that they are more than the sum of their body parts.  Horses and Heroes will give veterans and military personnel the information they need to find alternative healing solutions, which can help lower the suicide rate.

It will provide the dual benefit of also providing jobs.  We will be hiring veterans already in the entertainment industry as well as opening the door for those who are looking for a new career.

Horses and Heroes will create a greater awareness healing benefits of Equine Therapy for civilians, military personnel, veterans, and their families not only for those currently serving, but also for those from previous wars, who never addressed their issues. Horses and Heroes can’t fix the system nor will be it is a cure all.  What it will do is show that there are alternatives, which  more effectively help them heal their way home.  They can't go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from the now and make a brand new end.

This is the video we shot to grandfather Horses and Heroes into Section 181 of the Jobs Act.

The Eagle Cried

The Eagle Cried…
Rick Turton
Viet Nam
1970-1971

The acrid smell of cordite
Still hovered in the air.
No breeze to wash away
The scent of Satan’s hair.

The Medivac’s are fading now,
Their cabins filled with dead.
So many grisly pictures
Are surging through my head

Another hill’s been taken
The earth all charred and black
We all know what’s coming;
Tomorrow…”Give it back!”

The Eagle cries from barren trees
His tears, he cannot hide.
Where once a proud, young soldier stood
My Warrior Brother, died

The scorched ground that surrounds me;
Am I in Dante’s Hell?
This skirmish now is over
We saw them as they fell.

My Warrior Brother, Donny,
Died that gruesome day.
He took the bullets meant for me
With his final words did say,

“Tell Mom and Sis I loved them!
Please! Don’t let me down!”
I promised I would tell them
A promise I’d soon drown.

The Eagle cried that tragic day,
Back in Sixty-Eight.
A promise made…un-kept,
To my Warrior mate.

One thing that I’m sure of,
A thing that gives no rest.
The hounds of Hell still battle
Deep within my chest.

A bottle’d been my address
For forty years or more.
I’d take ‘most any drug,
I couldn’t find the door.

Somewhere there’s a record,
Of drugs and booze and tears.
When I crawled out of the bottle
I’d been buried in for years.

Half a decade sober.
Not a real long time.
That’s how long I’m clean tho’,
My life’s becoming mine.

The winds of war are blowing by;
In history books they last.
I’m in the winter of my years,
My best days...they have passed.

The one thing that I’ve never done
One thing I cannot face:
To visit the Memorial,
The headstone for that place.

My daughter said, “You have to go,
To honor those who died!”
I said I know I should…
But that I’d go…I lied

Then one day the phone rang;
A call I knew I’d dread.
It was Donny’s sister,
“Please help me!” Karen pled.

“I’ve spent these years just searching
I even hired a sleuth.
I finally found out where you live…
I need to know the truth.”

“The Army’s always been real vague,
And their answers never matched.
I need to know what happened;
They always seemed detached”

“Our Mother has passed on now,
But I still need to know;
I’d really love to meet with you,
Please…just show me how!”

The hounds of Hell are roused again;
Their howling has re-started.
I force their shrieks out of my mind,
My path, it has been charted

Quiet now, you dogs of war!
It's time for a new quest!
It's time for me to wrestle you,
And lay your souls to rest!

Then I thought the one thing,
A thought I'd never say,
Should I meet her at The Wall,
And put my hounds at bay?

I finally said I’d meet with her,
With a voice that was not mine.
“The Wall is where I’ll meet you.
I’ll see you there at nine.”

I saw flowers in her hand,
As she walked my way.
“Yellow roses were his favorite.”
Later she would say.

“Hello, my name is Karen.”
She said when we did meet
“Donny wrote me many things,
I knew that you’d be sweet!”

“I know this must be hard for you,
But I really need to know.
Please tell me how my brother died,
That day, so long ago.”

The moment had arrived.
I could hide this fact no more.
I said things I’d kept hidden,
Behind my mind’s locked door

She took my hand in hers,
And waited patiently.
My head bowed down as I thought
Of words I had to say.

I knew my words would stab her heart
But she would not look away.
She watched me as I told her
Of that ghastly day.

“Your Brother died in my arms
In that nameless place.
He took the bullets meant for me
And died as we embraced!”

Her head dropped down, when I was done
Her chin upon her chest.
A single tear rolled down her cheek,
“Now Donny’s laid to rest”

I walked with her as she made her way
To the Wall of Stone.
She laid the flowers at the base
Her silent prayer was sown.

At last I’ve honored those who fell,
Whose names are etched in rows.
We touched the name of Donny,
Who died so long ago.

And we cried…

The Eagle’s cry is heard again;
It lives within the Wall!
Each time that a name is touched
The Eagle gives his call.

Reluctant at first, when Al learns that Seamus O'Grady, the crime boss, exploits underage girls, he decides to take the case. When O'Grady kidnaps Al's assistant Heather Bunche, it becomes personal. Buffalo Soldier

After completing a rigorous mission, Sergeant Ben Carter's detachment is given some much-deserved leave. Ben decides to stay on Fort Union, which is a mistake, because his commander assigns him to track down a band of renegade Apache warriors and return them to the reservation. A group of new recruits is assigned to Ben's command for the mission. He has to train them on the job, deal with warriors who would rather die than live on the reservation, and, as usual, cope with the prejudices of white settlers who resent seeing black men in uniform.

The White Dragons

The assassination of a minor official in the country of Dagastan sets in motion a chain of events that have international repercussions. American embassy deputy, David Morgan finds himself having to deal with an explosive situation when his ambassador engages in clandestine meetings with officials who plan to take over the government. At the same time, Alison Chambers, a State Department intelligence analyst, and Lee Kennedy, a diplomatic security agent, find themselves the targets of a vicious assassin when they look into the murder of a State Department desk officer who has been inquiring about the assassination. In Dagastan and in Washington, DC, a shadowy group known only as the White Dragons, appear to be manipulating events for unknown reasons, and anyone who gets to close to the truth of what they're doing ends up dead.
