Susan Seaforth Hayes Actress and Author
Until You Walk The Path, You Won’t Know Where it Goes will be chatting with actress, author, and historian Susan Seaforth Hayes on December 20, 2012 at 1 pm eastern as she talks about her new novel Trumpet and her amazing career as well her other many interests.
Susan Seaforth Hayes, professional actress by trade, is a historian by desire. Her degree from Los Angeles City College is in history, and the stack of books on her desk reflects an intense interest in the American West, European history, art history and Native American cultures. Had she not been so talented an actress she probably would be teaching today, or writing history books.
But Susan was destined to spend her life on stage and in front of cameras. Her initial theatrical experience was at the age of four, playing “Trouble” to Dorothy Kirsten’s “Madame Butterfly” for the Metropolitan Opera Company. At age eleven she toured a year with Billie Burke in Mother Was a Bachelor; and as a developing teenager she honed her crafts in the exciting world of television: Matinee Theatre, Lassie, Eve Arden, Wyatt Earp, Loretta Young, Danny Thomas; and films: Five Pennies, Angel in My Pocket, Billy, California.
While Susan plugged away at her college studies, interspersing classes with film, TV, and stage work, she mastered comedy and drama on TV’s Dragnet, FBI, Death Valley Days, Bonanza, Hallmark Hall of Fame, My Three Sons, Fugitive, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset Strip, Man from UNCLE, Wagon Train, Perry Mason, Emergency, Adam-12 and Ironside. She also gained stature in live performance on stage in Come Blow Your Horn, Mary Mary, Time Remembered and Ring Round the Moon.
When she was cast again and again in the exciting/demanding world of TV soaps Susan was finally forced to curtail her academic work. Young Marrieds (2 yrs), General Hospital (1 yr), The Young and the Restless (5 yrs), Sunset Beach and forty years plus on Days of our Lives. All this drama put a serious dent in her classroom attendance record. The sudsy genre produced four Emmy nominations, several Best Actress Awards, a Time Magazine cover, many years of Top-Ten Lists in fan-mags, and even a husband, when in 1974 Susan Seaforth married her Days co-star Bill Hayes.
Some of her activities which have not involved performing have included serving on the board of the Screen Actors Guild, addressing the House Judiciary Committee, and the Republican Platform Committee, docenting at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, and serving as an Elder and Board Member of the First Christian Church of North Hollywood. She has also lectured at Los Angeles Valley College (on Native American religions) and Boston University on acting for television.
The sweep of her credits in film, stage and television include Oklahoma, The Two of Us, I Do I Do, Same Time Next Year, Harvey, Matlock, Heartbeat, Dream Machine, Wrestling with God, 42nd Street, Social Security, Mame and a 1993 13-week tour of Oliver in Florida, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur! In the 90s, Susan wowed Birmingham audiences with her “Mama Rose” in Gypsy, toured Love Letters extensively, played the wily “Mrs. Rubinstein” on TV’s Platypus Man, and charmed West Virginia Public Theatre fans in A Christmas Carol and Cinderella.
In 1997, Susan co-starred in the premiere of Bernard Slade’s sequel play Same Time Another Year; in the spring of 1999, she created the role of “District Attorney Steele” on NBC-TV’s Sunset Beach. In 2007 she sang “I’m Still Here” in Follies and added then added Funny Girl to her credits in 2008.
Her memoir, Like Sands Through the Hourglass, was published by Penguin-Putnam in 2005, and enjoyed robust sales. Currently she is polishing her first historical novel, soon to be released by Decadent Publishing. And, yes, she continues to add her personal spice to the role of “Julie” on Days of our Lives (over 3,000 episodes!).

TRUMPET
Brilliant and sassy Elizabeth Trumpet fantasizes starring on the London stage, but to become an actress in 1803 is tantamount to losing her virginity in the most debasing way.
After watching her mother die and her father lose his mind, the courageous sixteen-year-old must find a way to save her family. She scores her first acting job as a fencer—the deadly skill she learned from her brother training for the military. Blessed with talent and a rare singing voice, Lizzie pursues her career, learning from theatrical characters high and low.
When reckless actor Jonathan Faversham sets eyes on Miss Trumpet, he knows he’s found the partner of his life. But Faversham carries ruinous baggage from a dark past. Entangled in lust and ambition, Lizzie gives him her heart and they reach the heights together. Until Lizzie gets more applause than he…
From the magnificence of Regency palaces and the Theatre Royal Covent Garden to the sun-baked pyramids of Egypt and the arms of a real-life Samson, Lizzie is never far from trouble. As her brother rides to glory with Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars, great events threaten her survival. Danger lurks behind stage curtains, when a madman sets fire to take her life and she lifts a sword in revenge.
Will this once innocent girl, with her rise to stardom, be remembered for her art? Or for her shame?

Operation Home Base: A Family of Man Drama of Forgiveness and Second Chances
Operation
Home Base
We've
got your back.
Theresa Chaze
One of The Red Cross’s functions is
passing messages to and from military personnel. However, they are
limited to the passive role of sharing information. What if there
was an organization that could do more? Facing their own demons,
veterans and civilians come together to actively make a difference
with legal, medical and logistics help for military personnel,
veterans and their dependents? Their motto is “we've got your
back.”. What if in their dedication to help, the founders of
Operation Home Base stumbled upon an international cover up, which
puts a target on their own backs? Do they shrink away in fear or do
they damn the torpedoes and face the challenge with a Gung-Ho
mentality?
A medic in Nam, Martin Flying Crow
returned home only to find the war followed him. By helping others,
he was able to quiet the ghosts in his head. He gained national
attention and the friendship of retired Lieutenant Colonel Elaine
Reynolds after he talked a Marine out of committing suicide.
Together they pulled enough resources together to achieve a
non-profit status and were able to move Operation Home Base from
Martin's garage into a small office building.
The organization once again gained
national attention when they used their connections both in and out
of the military to investigate the disappearance of PFC Hank Bogley
and his squad. When they start to unravel the lies and
misinformation, they suddenly become the targets of a national smear
campaign. Although their personal and professional motives are
brought into question, the board refuses to back down.
Unable to deter them, their lead
detractor, Valhalla does an about face and offers to support them
with endless financial, political, and logistic support. There is
one catch. Operation Home Base must accept their representative as
the new head of their organization. Valhalla chooses a man who knows
Martin's secrets. He knows because the same ghosts haunt him. Is
he the distraction to keep Martin busy, while they use the money,
influence and access to classified information to destroy Operation
Home Base from the inside out?
Operation Home Base combines MASH and
The Waltons with NCIS to create a family of man drama about
forgiveness and second chances. From the senseless murder of a
therapy dog to two teens stealing a tank to a Native American's
family having to fight for their loved one's last wishes to be
honored, Operation Home Base intertwines real life situations with a
fictional international conspiracy. From World War II to the current
conflict, the stories will show military personnel and veterans as
real people, not just disposable parts of the war machine. Its
tagline is helping others heals our own wounds.

What do Film Audiences Want?
It was implied to me yesterday that I am archaic. That I don't know what the modern audience wants. I always loved films because they were a break in the fast pace, competitive world. Those two hours were a time to laugh, cry, be scared and visit other worlds. It was a time to relax and take a break from my own worries and life challenges. You fell in love with and along with the characters. You shared their adventures and their challenges. You also shared in their successes. They gave you hope that you could also win in your life.
But evidently movies aren't like that any more. I was told that in order to get foreign sales there had to be nudity and sex . Evidently they are more important the the foreign markets instead of love and romance. Plot and character development were less important than the having the scenes strobe across the screen. I have been told that the modern audiences don't have the attention span, patience, or the intelligence to watch movies that have actual plot and character development. It's so much easier to produce shallow films; they sell more toys, beach towels and other crap.
I don't believe this to be true. I believe that there is intelligent life out there, but I think that they are being ignored. I know there is a market for good old fashion plot and character based films. So let them call me archaic. I'll wear the label proudly because I will not compromise on quality.

Not Just Another Book Of Shadows: A Wiccan Priestess Shares What she has learned
Not Just Another Book Of Shadows: A Wiccan Priestess Shares What she has learned.
With all the published Book of Shadows out there, many of which are authored by famous Wiccans and Pagans, why should anyone buy my ebook of shadows, Out of the Shadows and Into the Light? I'm not famous--at least not yet. I don't belong to a coven or church. The training I've had hasn't been structured or formal; I didn't go into a classroom to be taught by Lord or Lady High Priestess or Priest. None of this was around when I started down the path. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, there weren't occult bookstores, at least not where I grew up. If you were lucky you could find books on Astrology--what you sun sign meant, but not much more. Books on magic taught you tricks. Witches were evil. Pagans were backward and ignorant. If you were clever, you found books on Spiritualism. Nor did my family have a long history of casting spells and stirring cauldrons, so I can't lay claim to a long magical heritage. I was raise Catholic, which in a way prepared me for doing rituals
That is what I didn't have. What I did have was so much more than could be found in books or with title honored teachers. There are so many things that can't be taught with words or demonstrations in a classroom; it can only be found by practical experience and good old fashion hard work.
On both sides of my parentage, there were abilities. My grandmother was not only able to sense the dead, but frequently see them. She also had a way of knowing with out knowing how she knew, which helped know when to play the lottery. Although, she never won big, she won frequently. Unfortunately, her Christian heritage kept her from understanding and training her gift. When she saw the other side, it frequently frightened her. Her sister, Edith had a natural intuitiveness about people. She could read them like no other, but she also didn’t understand her talent. Instead, she used alcohol to suppress her impressions. There were family rumors about their mother, but back then, children were never included in the discussions about the weirdness in the family. My grandmother would say, “little pictures have big ears.” Sometimes at night, I would pretend to be asleep so that I could listen; unfortunately, it didn’t take too long for me to stop pretending and I missed out on a lot. My mother knew how to communicate with animals and instinctively knew they needed to be healed. We had two puppies that contracted parvo that the vet had given up on. She brought them home and proved him wrong. She had a knack of seeing into other’s lives. Once she described to a woman her entire house down to the color of the walls in her bedroom; the woman’s reaction prevented her from ever doing it again. They were Christian, yet they were also spiritually gifted in ways that they didn't understand therefore never gained control over their abilities.
When I was about five, I told my grandmother’s neighbor, Kate, that I saw fairies in her garden. She took me into her kitchen and poured water into an old bowl and put candlestick in the center. She lit the candle and had me watch the flame as she talked to me. Decades later I remembered in a dream how she shut down that part of my natural gifts. When I was ready, not only did the memory come back but the ability as well. Kate was a very spiritual woman, who went to church every morning at 6 am. Her faith was an active part in her life, yet she still knew how to reach the earth spirits. Although her age kept her from doing much work, her gardens were always lush and her grapevine remained fertile in spite of its age. Her home was old and run down. She was one of the last people in town to install indoor plumbing. The only source of heat for the large two story home was a wood stove in the kitchen, yet it was always warm. Her house was unique. It was two story, but the upper level could be reached both from the inside and out. The wooden stairs led to a porch and then the entrance. She had board it up, keeping whatever was in on the inside and keeping the rest of us out. When she died, so did her gardens and the house seem to collapse into itself.
Growing up, I felt safer and more at home in woods than anywhere else. My grandmother's boyfriend had an 80 acre farm. I would spend hours wandering by myself, knowing that nothing could harm me while I was among the trees. It was the place I where I was the most connected. Just before the swamp, there was a natural circular field with a single tree in the center. It was a was the place I went to hide and think.
Just out of high school, my friend, Kim and her father, Bobby taught me channeling. Kim, another friend, Lynne and myself spent the summer walking between worlds. To say we were obsessive would be an understatement. We became very good at allowing the Goddesses and Gods to speak through us and they helped us open the spiritual doors within us. We were young and felt immortal, which made us fearless of the unknown and the consequences of our actions. It was a spiritual summer that changed all of us, especially me. That fall the three of us parted ways. I wandered through life for almost a year. What I had experienced made me question everything that I had been taught. I was very confused, so I did a lot of drinking and partying to stop the thinking.
In 1977, I started community college before going on to Michigan State University. By moving away, I was able to start releasing the old negative beliefs about not only myself but also the world beyond. I started doing more research and join the Metaphysical Society that met on the MSU campus. Through this group I met a beautiful soul could have very well been an incarnated angel; Mary was an older woman, who was not only wise but also very loving. Her nurturing heart helped me have faith in my abilities. She helped me open the doors that Kate had closed. We studied Eastern philosophies, kabala, and energy healing. It was also the time I picked up my first Tarot deck and started to use them to focus my intuition. The summer of 1981 when I officially initiated, my dragon spirit awakened and reentered by soul. It was a time of great awareness and challenge. What I had received what had I asked for, but it was more than what I was emotionally prepared to deal with. It took me several years to regain balance.
That all happened before the mid eighties. It was years ahead of the spiritual awakening that was to come for others. The late 80's and the 90's when the spiritual awakenings began in mass, I had already gone through the karmic test of air, fire and had started the emotional test of water. I had learned how focus my energy into healing through Reiki and became disciplined enough to control my other gifts. When I gained control over myself, I was able to reawaken memories from the lives before, which brought forward past lessons and gave me access to old talents.
All that I have experience has given me a unique perspective not only on life, but also gave me the ability to see how we are all interconnected. None of us are really alone. Like pieces of a puzzle, we all have our own unique shape and image, but we are also part of one big picture. Out of the Shadows and Into the Light is more than a book of spells and rituals; it contains what I have learned along the way. When we lack something in our life, whether it be love, prosperity or security, the sources is always an emotional or spiritual wound. By healing the injury, the path to healing opens and you will be able to find what you seek. Oprah once said there are two emotions, love and fear. I have gone one step further by adding--if you come from fear, you can never have love; however, if you come from love, you will never lack for it. By healing ourselves, we open our hearts and souls to that which we desire the most. It is this perspective that make Out of the Shadows and Into the Light different than other Book of Shadows. It is a 114 page full color ebook with information on healing, love, prosperity and protection. There are also sections on Dragon Magic and Justice Rituals. In addition, there are articles on Kundalini, the elements and manifesting. It is available as a Kindle and on my site at www.theresachaze.com.

Establishing a Brand name
Most writers think their work is done once the manuscript has been sent to the printer; it is the reason that so many books fail to live up to their potential. Even with a PR team or a traditional publishing house working back up, the bulk of the marketing and promotions is still the writer's responsibility and obligation. No one else knows the book’s potential or the uniqueness of the work better than the writer does.
PR and publishing marketing teams divide their attention among all their clients. However, their limited time and resources are given first to those authors and books that show the most potential. Therefore, it is up to the author to establish a brand name with the primary target market that will be easily expandable into the general readership. In many ways, publishing is just like finding any other job--in order to get a job you have to have experience; in order to get experience you have to have a job. In publishing, in order to be successful you have to have readers; in order to gain a readership you have to be successful.
By definition, a brand name is the general field or focus the product. Who does the product appeal to and why? For writers, it would be the genre. Although genres are intertwined, most books are labeled with one primary. It is the core the author works from not only when writing, but also for the marketing plan. It is this structure that allows the readership to know what to expect when they open the book. Stephen King’s novels are primarily horror, while Stephen Hawking is non-fiction physics. If the branding is effective, it will not only creating a niche market for the work, but for the author as well.
A major mistake most authors make is limiting their promotions to just their work. By creating bridges to similar topics or causes, the author expands their target readership to those who have similar interests but who would not normally read the genre. By allow the reader to see the back story behind the development or to get to know the person behind the work, the author creates more of a buzz.
If the author's blog is solely focused on promoting the book, it will rapidly become boring and will loose readership. However, if it also includes posts about the author's activities and interests, it will diversify the SEO keywords and expand who will be drawn to the blog. A fiction author cannot only write about her or his specific genre, but she or he can also generalize about related topics. A science fiction author could very easily talk about new technologies, NASA, research projects or write reviews of other science fiction novels. In addition, if an author is involved with social issues or caused, writing about these topics will not only make the author a real person, but also catch the search engines attention on those topics as well.
Home sites are different. Although they can have the blog listed, most author's sites focus entirely on the author and her or his work. Stephen King's site contains:
News
Biography
His works
Future works
Miscellany
Message Board
The last two listings contain more diverse information that Stephen King fans would find interesting. His page is continually updated and expanded with new information. By keeping it fresh, it insures return visitors as well as new ones, which have found the site through the search engines. The message board makes the site interactive, giving the fans an active role. Readers and fans cannot only ask questions of King but each other as well, which once again increases the number of times individuals return to the site.
In order for a book to be successful, the marketing plan needs to be kept current. Stagnation on any level can cause a good book to become lost in the sea of new releases. To continue the analogy, promoting a book needs to be like waves rolling onto the coast; even during calm seas, one wave is always followed by another, which keeps the shore continually saturated. Book promotions are the same. In order to keep the interest of fans and expand the readership, promotional material must remain fresh and constant. One wave of press release or ads, no matter how effective, will soon dry up if it isn’t quickly followed up by another new wave.
