Teen Actor Sean Martin Gives Shelter Animals a Voice

Until You Walk The Path, You Won’t Know Where it Goes will be chatting teen actor and animal activist Sean Martin on September 19 at 4 pm eastern as he talks about his organization “Kids Adopt a Shelter”

Sean Martin was born on April 5, 2000 and recalls wanting to act since the tender age of two years old. This lively and eloquent youngster grew serious about acting at ten years old. His acting debut was as “Young Francisco” of Monsters Inside Me, an Animal Planet series. Martin’s career now includes roles in various College Humor spoofs, television shows such as Team Toon and Redrum and starring as “Damaso” in the film Sin Dolor, which premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

His passion for animals inspred Martin to create “Kids Adopt a Shelter” to help animals worldwide. “Kids Adopt A Shelter” has grown from 1,000 Facebook “likes” within 24 hours to over 6,200 Facebook "likes," a New Zealand representative, Canadian representatives, 23 state representatives, and over 55 shelter representatives. It has a very simple mission statement:

"My mission is actually very simple, I’d like to include all shelters, even the kill ones… Why? Aren’t there dogs and cats in there too? Why not make whatever time they have more comfortable also? Even more so… I don’t know.. I wish there were not kill shelters at all but reality is they are out there :( .., I wish people would stop breeding animals when so many DIE each day, I wish people would spay and neuter for dogs sakes, I wish people were not so ignorant to hate due to a breed type…I wish we could all just find it in our hearts to do just a little bit more… Its just the right thing to do, why don’t people get it?" – Sean Martin

Interview with American Heavy metal drummer and wildlife advocate Ted Kirkpatrick

Until You Walk The Path, You Won’t Know Where it Goes will be chatting with American Heavy metal drummer and wildlife advocate Ted Kirkpatrick on September 5 at 1 pm eastern.

A founding member of the band Tourniquet drummer, songwriter and lyricist Ted Kirkpatrick’s aggressive, musical, and often unorthodox approach to drumming has been recognized by thousands - critics and fans alike. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ted began playing drums at age 12. By age 14, Ted was playing drums along with the records of many of his early influences, bands like Rush, King Crimson, and ELP. He holds a business degree from the University of Texas, Austin, where he graduated with honors, and often finds himself using the skills learned in college in the many facets of successfully operating the band.

Since the very first Tourniquet release in 1990, Stop the Bleeding, Ted has been a strong voice for animal welfare. "I have a life-long passion for helping God's creation - the animals - and it matters greatly to me how they are treated.” You can hear and feel that passion in songs like "Ark of Suffering", "Stereotaxic Atrocities", and "Going, Going, Gone". His first solo album, released in 2010 – ODE TO A ROADKILL- features "vocals" courtesy of authentic haunting animal sounds, reflecting Ted's deep respect for the animal realm. ODE is a 42 minute hypnotic heavy wall of sound made possible by vintage Orange and Sunn amps. Produced, recorded, and mixed by Ted himself. "I have always wanted to make a record like ODE TO A ROADKILL. I have been a fan of slow “stoner” music for many years, and this album definitely fits that category, with my own influence to it, of course. The title track refers to the sad reality of the millions of animals who die each year on our roadways.”

Michigan Film Seeks Investors and Product Placement Sponsors

Over the weekend, I had a conversation with a gentleman, who suggested changes to Never Can Say Good-bye without having read the script, business plan, or seeing anything beyond an early pitch video.

According to him, I needed to change our ethnically and age diverse cast to one that was primarily African American and young. The locations needed to be moved from Northern Michigan to the Detroit area. Instead of the logging industry, the story should be focus on the automotive industry or another based in the Detroit area to take advantage of the current political controversy. The name should be changed from Never Can Say Good-bye to "Ghosts of Detroit--to have the metaphor of the ghost city for your ghost story" This is a film he could sell. The problem is that it is a totally different film than the one we want to produce.

His suggestions would have turned a paranormal thriller that combined romance and suspense into to a pop culture niche market film with political over tones that demographically limits its appeal and marketability, while adding in unnecessary controversy and shorting its relevancy.

Whether it be age, gender or ethnicity, a diverse cast means a diverse audience. Audiences like characters they can relate to as friends, family or the person they see in the mirror. Focusing heavy on one aspect of humanity excludes the rest.

Our characters range in age from 70 to 3. Amanda Ramsdell, who will be played by Dyan Canoon, carries the guilt and secrets of the past. Michael, a man between the ages of 45-54, believes he has found his lost love only to learn he made the same horrible mistake. Elizabeth, who will most likely be cast by Lauren Holly, is a woman who has runaway from life only to find herself back at the beginning and no longer able to run. Shane, Michael’s wife, is a woman in her mid to late twenties, who was given a second chance at love and redemption. In the past, Sara Jane and Randolph are more than soul mates, they are a mated pair whose love goes soul deep. But their time together is cut short when her father's vengeful actions causes Sara Jane's death. To save their newborn son, Randolph marries Audrey, but his heart still and always belongs to Sara Jane. Unable to manipulate Randolph into loving her, Audrey murders the child she see as standing in her way. His death causes a cascade of violence and revenge that spills over from into the next life. The question is, "Can they overcome their tragic past or will they be doomed to repeat it?"

Never Can Say Good-bye is set in the 1950's when the Michigan lumber industry was waning, but still vital and in present day when all that remains of the glory days are the mansions, the memories, and the ghosts. The story and the characters only fit in a rural or semi rural area. It would not be realistically in an urban area. Although there are some very large houses in the Detroit area, they do not have the look or feel of the mansions created by the lumber industry.

Michigan might be primary known for the automotive industry, but it was the lumber that turned common men into millionaires. As the timberline receded under the ax and saw so did civilization move north. Never Can Say Good-bye will be filmed in the northwest corner of the lower peninsula, primarily in Traverse City, Manistee, Bear Lake, and Torch Lake. Although most of the lumber baron homes have been converted into apartments, B & B's and businesses, they remain mostly intact. They are the perfect settings for a ghost story as well as a metaphor for an industry and lifestyle that was, but will never be exist again.

He did have two good suggestions that I had used, but had not focused enough on-- job creation and product placement. I had pitch both, but did not followed up. Since our conversation, I have been focusing more on the quality and quantity of the jobs we will be creating. We are a union picture, but we will be Taft-Hartleying those who need to be. We will be filling most of the 77 crew jobs from Michigan. I can't guarantee a specific number or percentage, because we are still going to hire the best person for the job.

Several of the primary characters have been cast. We would very much like Lauren Holly for the role of Elizabeth. We have talked with her people and did have an LOI. But we need to be funded to keep her. Kimberly Estrada, Dyan Cannon, Bill Hayes, and Sean Harmon have all been cast in roles. We had spoke with Adrian Paul's people for the role of Michael. Although we are still interested in him, his people aren't interested enough to return emails or phone calls, so we have opened up the role to other actors. If we can find an Michigan actor with an established record, so much the better.

The primary and featured roles we have yet to cast are:

Sara Jane: actress 18-20 who must look like she could be related to Dyan Cannon. She must also have good chemistry with Sean Harmon, who will be playing Randolph.

Shane: actress age 25-30 who must look like she could be related to Dyan Cannon. She must also have a good singing voice.

Jefferson: actor 25-30, any ethic background, but he must have a good singing voice.

Elaine: actress over 40 of any ethnic background

Judy: actress 49-53 who must look like she could be related to Dyan Cannon. We are considering Michigan actress Linda Pacic for this role or for the role of Elaine.

We will also be hiring most of the day players and all of the extras from Michigan.

The number of jobs we will be creating are:
9 person supervisory staff
77 member crew
5 character primary cast
8 character supporting cast
12 day players
200 paid extras

Our product placement will be two fold. We will be embedding family friendly products and services into the film, which will also be promoted in our marketing strategy. However, we have a separate campaign called No Where Else Like it, which will require a separate crew. We will be taking our cast around the state to show the uniqueness of Michigan. The sponsors will act as guides, hosts and in some cases fellow adventures as we explore the locations that are best known to natives. We will be going to the normal tourist locations, but we will not be producing a travel logs. Instead we will be having adventures, chatting with those we meet, and having a good time. Two of our locations are said to be haunted. We will be teaming up with a ghost hunting group and finding out if this is true. The videos we produced will be release on online through video sites and on social networking groups, as well as on the DVD's and with the downloads.

What he suggested is at the root of the decline in the entertainment industry. There is too much compromise in character and plot to make an easy sell. Instead of believing in the project and becoming a trend setter, they have been playing follow the leader. Those who follow are always behind the curve--always singing to someone else's song--always playing by someone else's rules. The gentleman on the phone said that there was nothing special about Never Can Say Good-bye. It was just a ghost story. But he is wrong. Never Can Say Good-bye is a ghost story, but it is far from being old hat. It is a fresh story with new twists. We are a trend setter that combines the old with the new not only with storytelling, but production and marketing techniques. We have intertwined Michigan's history with its present as we entwine the lives of three people in love, loss, and revenge.

Defending Film Incentives

For those who think the film industry and the film incentive doesn't help the states who have them. Let set aside the PR and tourism that film and television brings in to look at the hard numbers.

Film and Television are good paying jobs with benefits. Crews vary in size according to the budget and the individual projects. The bigger the budget the larger the cast and crew.

Never Can Say Good-bye is a low budge film. We still have:
9 person supervisory staff
77 member crew
5 character primary cast
8 character supporting cast
12 day players
200 paid extras

The average crew wage is $20.00 an hour plus fringe, which is the what we pay to the union for medical insurance and their retirement plan. Anything over 40 hours is paid at time and half. Most productions work at least a 50 hour work.

So many people think only those in the industry benefit. That is far from true. We will be paying for

food service for the cast and crew during the work hours as well as a dinner stipend.

Extras are non union positions that are paid for being part of the set. However, extras with scripted lines are paid union wages and can be eligible to join the unions.

For those think unions are bad; they are the ones who make sure their workers are paid a living wage and have set up the benefit programs for medical insurance and retirement funds that travel with the person from job to job. They also keep the working conditions safe. Union workers find themselves working not only in their home states, but across the country and around the world. Both unions opened their doors to new members in Michigan. They saw it was a way to help their members and expand their ranks. Once a person gets their foot in the door at the entry level, they are more likely to be hired for other projects.

As a low budget film we will not only be pay the salaries and benefits for our cast and crew, but we will also be paying for services and products from local companies, who in tern will being paying salaries and benefits for the people they need to hire. Our cast and crew will no doubt be doing some shopping on their off time, including meals and transportation to explore the state. Again, spreading the film money around to more people and businesses.

None of this includes the people needed for the No Where Else Like it campaign which will have a crew of approximately 31 plus the actors plus the production equipment, vehicles and the resources to travel around the state

Each person, who directly or indirectly receives a paycheck, will be paying taxes and supporting other businesses, who will continue the cycle.

All these salaries have been paid, services and products bought, and taxes paid before the film is released. Shortly before the release, the marketing and promotional campaigns will go into full effect. The advertising budget will be spend with newspapers, radio stations, television stations and Internet marketing companies. All of whom have hired staffs, paid taxes, and all the rest.

Theatres also hire staffs, buy products, and pay taxes. When the film is released on DVD or download, there are also people hired to do the work both at the manufacture level and for retail sales. Pay-per-view and networks also pay wages and taxes.
Big budget or tent pole pictures have larger casts and crews, which require more resources for longer periods of time. They have a wider reach and bigger impact on any area they film in.

As a Michigan company not only will have spread the new money around and started the prosperity cycle, but ass it comes back around, we will be paying taxes on profits from the national and international ticket sales, DVD/download and network leasing.

Film and television are highly mobile. They can quickly move into an area, because they don't have to wait to build huge buildings or wait for bulky equipment to be delivered and set up. But they can also move out just as quickly.

When Snyder came into office and declared he was going to terminate the film incentive, Michigan lost four big budget films in a week. Louisiana really loved him, because most of those jobs, the new money, and the great PR went to them. Sure he kept the incentive. But the damage was done. The lower rate and the cap hurt the talented people and the businesses who set up shop. Many have already left to find work as have many others. The last census proved that the population dropped by 25%.

What few jobs that Snyder and his comrades have created are minimum wage without benefits. Those are so much better than $20.00 an hour plus benefits. For those, who defend the minimum wage jobs as being reliable need to remember that the origin incentive was bringing so many films to the state that there was very little down time between them. Want to tell me again how hurtful the incentive is to the state?

Courage isn't the lack of fear, but the ability to set it aside and  focus on what is truly important

Creating Jobs In Michigan

I am the Executive Producer at Cosmos Productions.  We are based in Traverse City.  However, we will be filming our paranormal thriller Never Can Say Good-bye in several locations around the north west part of the state.  Nearly all of of crew will be from Michigan as well as some of the cast and nearly 200 hundred extras.

The No Where Else Like it Campaign is part of our marketing strategy. Unlike the Pure Michigan campaign, which uses the same generic message over stock footage, we will be showing the unique wonder of Michigan, the companies that are based here, and the diversity of our population.

We will be creating 89 fully time jobs of which at least 44 will be filled by Michigan natives. The products and services we will be embedding the film will also be featured in the No Where Else Like it Campaign and our other marketing venues.

The issue we have been running into is that Snyder's policies have turned away investors from Michigan.  When they think of Michigan the images that come to mind are those of the Detroit which have yet to recover.

Detroit is rebuilding.  It would have recovered so much faster if the film incentive had been attacked and limited.  The film industry was bringing hundreds of millions of new money into the state and thousands of good paying jobs that would have helped Detroit as well as the state as a whole financial recover.

Never Can Say Good-bye is a low budget film that will bring good paying jobs and great PR to the state.  We will be creating a positive interest in Michigan much like what Some Where in Time did  for Mackinau Island.

Please share our information with your connections and introduce me to those who have the means and the will to help us produce Never Can Say Good-bye.  Here is the link to our video pitch.
